True. Waldschmidt has looked head and shoulders above anyone he has faced at the tournament so far but he is 23 and plays at Freiburg.

Hes a bit of a late bloomer. Didn't break through at Frankfurt or Hamburg but has had a pretty decent season at Freiburg. Not good enough for a top club but should carve out a decent career in the top flight, which didn't seem likely three or four years ago

I always find players who break through into senior football at a really young age end up being assessed on that rather than their actual ability.

Obviously I don't expect people to follow everyone that closely, but since Ødegaard played for my local club I can definitely tell you that this was not the case. Ever since he was 15 years old everyone was really excited about seeing him for the first team, and by 16 he was top 3 players in the (admittedly shit) Norwegian league. Unlike freaks like Lukaku who could dominate in his youth because of his physicality, Ødegaard dominated at such a young age despite his lack of it, which to me is much more interesting. Obviously it remains to be seen how far he'll go, but at 20 years old he's the only non-Ajax/PSV player in the Eredivisie's team of the season (ahead of the two years older van de Beek, who's mentioned in the wishlist thread here) and he's consistently the best player for his (again, admittedly shit) national team.

This was a weird time to ask that question, as he stagnated for a couple of years after joining RM and this year again showed huge growth as a player.

That's interesting to read though, looking at his numbers for last season now and they're pretty good. so do you think he's still destined to turn out for Madrid or any other top club?

Really hard to say. It's incredibly hard to break through at Real Madrid and with Hazard there he'd probably compete with Vinicius on the other wing, which isn't really a competition. It seems like he'll choose Sociedad and that it'll be a two-year loan so we'll have to see how he fares in La Liga.

Sociedad will be really interesting to watch next season with both Ødegaard and Alexander Isak lining up for them.

I see. I just judge him based on what I saw in the u21 and he is pretty killer in front of goal. And his youth record is stunning.

Odegaard is definitely still a future star. He was superb in the eredivise last year.

To be fair to Berg he would have been a great player if it weren't for all the injuries. He was breaking goalscoring records both in the domestic league, and then in Holland. Some of those used to belong to Luis Suarez.

They're trying to sign an exciting young Danish right sided forward, Andreas Skov Olsen, as well. It would be fun to watch Sociedad with a Scandinavian trio.

I was actually annoyed by this, Tone. I was talking with my boys yesterday and thinking there were a million tournaments happening simultaneously. There is no way that FIFA would've allowed this to happen with the World Cup or the European Championships. But all these minor continental championships and the good for nothing women can go on simultaneously

It's completely irresponsible to have THREE major finals on the same day. Is this how we support the growth of the game? Which one of these is the FIFA president supposed to prioritise?

I actually watched all 3 finals. nothing much they could do though. None of them wants to clash with confeds, world cup or euros.

I was only interested enough to watch the COPA and even then i missed many games in between.
I only watched the first couple of AFCON games but the poor quality wasn't worth giving up my sleep time.
I only followed the results of the Womens World Cup but didn't even do that with the Asian or Gold Cups.

Blaming FIFA could easily be a favourite pastime of mine but this year's scheduling was impossible for anyone.

The random Copa America (started in 1916) and the quadrennial Asian Cup (started in 1956) and Women's World Cup (started in 1991) are played the year after the World Cup.

AFCON (started in 1957) and Concacaf Gold Cup (started in 1961) play every odd year and this year the Confederation of African Football switched to the summer after years of pressure from European clubs as African footballers were losing value due to the mid-season scheduling.

The even years are taken up by the quadrennial World Cup, European Championship (started in 1960) and Olympics.

CONMEBOL have now announced a change so that the Copa America will now be held in the same year as the European Championship from 2020.

As such i think the Gold Cup, being the least marketable, is most likely to be moved to reduce the competition for the 2023 Women's World Cup.

I think they took into account not to affect club football and the mandatory 1 month rest for the players.

They scheduled it widely spaced few hours apart for effort. Always thought Gold Cup and Copa should be combined as one competition though for the American region. The group stages matches were too one sided for Gold Cup (Haiti and Curacao's effort aside), and Copa always have odd number teams and have to invite random teams to make up the numbers.
