We wouldn't get what we paid for Torreira at the moment, let alone £50 million. Bench players who turn into utility men don't have much market value, which is why it's pointless to get rid of him now unless we think he really isn't better than current form. And we've seen enough to know that he is.

Keep Torreira and give him a chance in a functional system where we utilise his strengths, and then we can reassess. Maybe he still wants to leave, but if he does we will have a much easier time getting paid for a performing player.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert

He's only good at the base of a three. Which means we can't use a creative AM. Which means our football is even worse under this coward of a coach.

He was a great as a DM. Just stick him there and let him do his work, pass to the next midfielder to advance. Stop playing him as a 2nd striker.

I suspect that Torreira got found out by opposition managers. Players like him aren't unusual in the premiership, but generally don't play for the top clubs. He's kind of like a Scott Parker who will do a job in certain circumstances, but really you just put a big lad up against him and he's removed from the game, like what we used to do with Vieira. He doesn't have a single elite attribute.

I definitely think the fact that he is so tiny has worked against him, for sure.

Fair, Capi. He did have an insane engine when we bought him, but it doesn't seem like he will ever be able to keep it up it for a prolonged period of time. Kanté-esque levels of energy at Sampdoria though.

He has always looked like he was done for to me after a 30 yard sprint in his time here.

Whilst I don't think he's elite at anything, he's very good at a lot of things. I have always thought, as stupid as it might sound to some, if he was 5'10" he'd be one hell of a player: but he's not and he really does get buffeted around because he's so tiny. Because of that I think he knows he can't take chances on the ball and that makes him cautious in possession. He's too eager to play a pass, any pass, too often, and that means his passing ability--which I think is potentially very good--is far too conservative and not progressive enough.

I think he'll find his game in time at a big club, but I don't think it's only Emery preventing him from shining here.

I really don’t think his frame holds him back. When he was on form I recall a game where he came up against Dacoure and bossed him throughout.

The issue is he ran out of steam. And that’s the big question mark surrounding him. But it can’t help playing him in a duel number 10/box to box role. In the last game he was regularly both our deepest and our most advanced midfielder and asked to cover the wings. A man who doesn’t actually have the best stamina. Then folks complain about his performance. It’s insane.

Seems a bit mentally weak too.

Always stories about him wanting to leave, several times he's been crying on the pitch.

We've mostly done a good job of getting rid of those types in recent years.

my one concern when we got him was whether his energy would translate to england, where matches can become wind-shiield wiper affairs very quickly, especially away from home. he looked like he was able to be bit more surgical in his defensive timing in serie a, and that hasn't quite translated to england

Kante usually plays with a DM though. He played with Drinkwater at Leicester and his best spell at Chelsea was alongside Matic. We need that sort of player rather than another Torreira.

Matic played the box to box role at Chelsea, Kante sat deeper. Leicester were ultra conservative and played two deep centre mids. Kante has looked a little underwhelming since Sarri tried to turn him into a box to box type player.

Maybe that's the lesson, neither of our centre mids should push too far up.

I disagree with your assessment of both of those midfields. The point is Matic and Drinkwater are both similarly big players who can pass the ball around. I think we need a player more in that mould to play DM than a Kante type, especially considering Kante is basically a once off and Torreira is behind him in so many ways. I just can't see Torreira working as a lone DM long term.

Sampdoria seemed to be thinking along the same lines last season. They sold Torreira to us, brought in a proper-sized short-passing DM in Albin Ekdal, and then played Praet in more of a Ramseyesque box to box role where he could drive the game forward from deep, and they improved the quality of their midfield overall. Their fans seemed happy with how it all played out.

One of the issues with Torreira is that I don't think he's suited for three-man midfields at all. He hasn't got the physique or the distribution to be a DM, but he's also a little underwhelming as a box to box player. And playing him as a #10 is just classic Emery shithousery because he thinks it's more important to have someone press in that area of the pitch than it is to get the ball to stick and knit the attack together.

I just don't buy that there's inherent weaknesses in his game that prevent him from being a success here. How do we explain his great run of form last year? A fluke? I certainly don't buy that 'PL managers worked him out', PL managers are not that clever.
