Going by what I've seen from Emery so far I'm not sure if we have any style. I don't think we do anything well!

I think a change to an inverted 3 would work better and allow the 2 advanced CMs to support a high press far more than we currently see.

There was an instance last night where he shepherded one of their players out of play without giving him any excuse to dive in the box.
That is what he is best as.
Not a fan of square pegs in round holes and hoped those days had gone with Wenger.

Was hoping he could develop into a more well rounded player, and there’s still room for that. If not, he’s just another Coq, Pong, etc - a midfield enforcer / tough tackler. Nothing wrong with that, but we could have kept Coq if all we were getting was more Coq.

Statistically they are very similar in alot of areas to be honest.

Torreira is a lot better on the ball, both technically and in terms of decision making.

Nah. VVD and Mustafi is totally not similar in stats and style.

I thought the same about Torreira but his first season here was almost exactly identical to 15-16 Coquelin. Even no. of passes and accuracy is identical. Think I posted it before the graph.

Yeah, he's absolutely a box to box player. He was likely brought in to press high to give Xhaka more time and space on the ball.

The problem is that he seems to have lost his high energy levels in 2019, and they were half the point of him. He's not a patch on Willock or Guendouzi in terms of technique or creativity, let alone Aaron Ramsey. I think he had a very specific role and he has struggled to perform it for a while.

Hopefully it's just his body trying to adapt to Premier League, but I don't remember Kanté dropping like this. Then again Kanté is a freak so it's not an entirely fair comparison. Torreira in Italy was a similar type of player at any rate.

I really don't understand why so many pundits and podcasters think Torreira is a DM distributor pick the ball up from the CBs type. He's definitely a box to box CM who can join the press and win the ball. His dead-ball ability is a bonus, especially considering his height. Gives him something to do on set pieces. He's got a decent burst forward as well.

Hopefully the 3 man midfield sticks around because it allows him to play his natural game a bit more than baby sitting Xhaka in the 2 man midfield.

He's box-to-box-worthy but he's also got superb defensive instincts.

There was that moment last night after Martinez saved a shot and it spilled into the box, and Torreira immediately positioned himself between the ball and the opposition player who was about to strike home from the rebound. Another moment stood out too but I can't remember what it was.

In any case he struggles when there's too much distance around him. Tiny legs = can't run over distances. Needs to be part of a much more intelligent unit, which Emery cannot seem to forge.

Yup, he’ll look good in a compact unit. we don’t do him any favors with how stretched we get all the time. Plus, honestly, to me he doesn’t really look like he has the legs or engine for a box to box role.

I think he look ok as a box to box midfielder when we're dominating possession. Similarly, he could get away with it in Italy where pace of play is slower. He doesn't have the drive - like Willock does - to play box to box when we sit deep and/or in open games.

It's clear that Emery has been using him as a box to box midfielder but my issue is not with him but how this impacts on the team.
Without fail, every time he is caught up the pitch when the opposition breaks, our back four are in trouble.
Guendouzi should be covering but what happens all too often is a 40 yard free run with the best outcome a Xhaka foul.

The problem there is the lack of coordination with the press. If we don’t press high up it’s not an issue, if we press well it will still happen now and then but not enough for it to be a problem area. We don’t press well at all.

I can see Torreira leaving at the end of the season and shining somewhere else. Just a gut feeling.

Think Willock and even Guendouzi have a long way to go to make Torreira redundant. For me the former two are still talented youngsters who look like they might become starters for us while Torreira definitely was good enough to start for us until earlier this year. Not going to toss him aside because of a poor spell, especially when it's a given Guendouzi and Willock will go through one of their own soon enough

I like him, but get the feeling as well that this will be his last season in the PL. Would be a real shame as he is different to many of the squad options we have and if we were dominating possession, his ability to win the ball higher up would be fantastic.
