I'm watching this game at work ... and it makes me want to actually go back to work. Hope this goal brings some life into it.

Why don't Sweden play Guidetti instead?

Yeah definitely. I saw someone in another thread criticise the VAR system, but I love when it's being used like this. It hardly disrupts the game any more than a serious foul does but it has the potential to correct match-defining moments. Zero downside to it so far in my book.

I think the process can be improved on but as a concept it's brilliant.

The process is thrice as good in this tournament compared to Budesliga and Serie A already, huge improvement. Ref waste almost no time in giving pens after watching the review and the crowd get to see the replays as well.

the fact that they only want to be able to use it for a very select few types of incidents is what is working for it IMO.. penalty review.. goal review.. red card review... that's about it, no? all things that could benefit from another 3-4 sets of eyes

Because Granqvist injured him in training a week before the world cup 😆

I think he'll get a few minutes here and then start against one of Germany and Mexico.

Yeah, improvement's been incremental so far. The system will get better and better over the next few years. It's so nice to see that football can actually be progressive when old conservative men aren't holding it back.

The amount of penalties given due to VAR has surprised me, and shows how much wrong referee decisions affect results. Denmark, France and (Sweden) probably wouldn't have won without this technology.

It's great, isn't it? Referees have been treated like barn animals for too long.

I want to rub this in the face of everyone who told me poor decisions 'even themselves out'.

Hwang Hee Chan should have scored, What a chance!

lol.. koreans thinking that was a handball.. no way

Congratulations Klaus, first OMITT member with a win in this tournament so far no? Dreadful game though and I've actually sat through Morocco Iran

Cheers! Nice to finally see someone recognise that the result was partly down to me watching!

It was a bad game of football for sure. I don't know if I'd have bothered with it normally but I was texting live updates to my dad.

I've heard nothing of the sort, looks like English media trying to stir shit again. The only one who criticised him was Matthäus and that was for some joke reason like him not singing the national anthem.

He kind of deserves it though for that Erdogan shit, along with Gündogan.

You’re still asking for him to be dropped because of the Turkey thing? Let it rest.

It's kind of strange to play for country A and then pose with dictator of country B, calling said dictator 'my president'. That would have your loyalty questioned in any country. In Turkey, it would probably land you in jail  😆

It's a silly situation but if theres anyone to criticise in this situation it's Erdogan who gave them the shirts including the text written on them if reports are to be believed. They're meeting the president of their parents country, they're not exactly going to read what's written on the shirt drop it in disgust and run out the room.

This idea that they have a responsibility because they play for Germany however is absolute garbage and needs to end. You can't exclude politics from football. I can condemn Erdogan using Özil and Gündogan for PR reasons just like Philipp Lahm needs to be condemned for being best buds with Merkel and stating publicly before and after retiring that she's the woman to lead Germany.

Matthäus is such a bloody prat. No wonder Effenberg couldn't stand him. Wasn't he tearing into Mertesacker too recently for some deranged reason?

Özil didn't have a particularly good game against Mexico, but he was easily one of the best Germans on the pitch:

I'm genuinely wondering how much of a factor ethnicity is when it comes to some of the criticism he gets. The way they try to analyse his body language to find uncharacteristically German traits like laziness is such bullshit. He always works hard on the pitch, especially off the ball. That shit is indispensable to any team. "He looks disinterested" or "he has no passion" is the most useless fucking observation I've ever heard in my life.

I just had to listen to the 'expert' Alexander Axén in the swedish studio who mentioned Matthäus's criticism and talked about how he wasn't sure what Özil is good at on the pitch, and it's just... really? We let any fucking dross have an opinion on national tv now? You're starting to see why he's been fired from every manager job he's ever had within a year or two.

Ozil wasn't outstanding but he was decent. Compare that to around the 6 or 7 German players who were downright awful, and yet somehow the discussion is about him again? Fuck off.

It's because of his 'body language'. Everyone knows that body language is key to winning football games.

Ozil certainly wasn't the reason they lost. 3rd most ball recoveries was the one that stands out for me. If you're most skillful attacking player is 3rd at ball recoveries, the rest of your team really just isnt doing what they should be.

Looking forward to watching Hirving Lozano. Really like the look of that kid.

Lozano not too unlike early Sanchez for us. A livewire going forward and very aggressive tracking back. Looks a very good player

Harry kane like selfish shooting there by son

I like the risks Mexico take by keeping their 3 attackers upfront even for corners.
It worked against Germany and has led to this opening penalty.

Glad that the South Korean keeper's ridiculous gamesmanship didn't affect Vela.

I find Layun extremely irritating. Thinks way too much of himself.

This Mexican commentator on fox 😆 he should sit with ray hudson

Son was that selfish since his Hamburg days which makes him the proto-Kane. Always had great pace and shooting technique but never liked him for that selfish streak.

He's a really good wing back, but not his best when play as a CM like now.

Hector Herrera is really a quality player. And a european club should buy Gallardo the LB soon, impressive performances

Alvarez at centreback is a liability for the Mexiacans. Luckily Son's touch is just as dodgy.

Edit--it's actually Moreno I'm talking about!

Alli's the same.

That's why I desperately want Eriksen to leave since he's the one that makes Spurs a functional attack.

Son is deceptively fast.

To be fair, the centreback he beat in that race is tragically slow.

One minute injury time and ball goes back to defender from a corner. This is some amazing world cup. Lol.
