That's the first thing I thought of too. His dad literally opened with saying "It's not official yet because nothing is signed." If they wanted to get this done early they would have. I think they're holding out for better clubs, just in case, and if there's nothing concrete after the World Cup they'll take the Arsenal money.

He hasn't though, has he? All he actually said is that Torreira will be leaving and the papers have assumed it's to join us. Don't think he actually mentions Arsenal.

In fairness if he's saying the player is gone and literally every publication reporting on it is linking him to us and only us since Napoli left the picture, so it's not that far fetched to add two and two together.

I'm guessing the issue is as simple as the deal with the club being agreed after the world cup started and therefore we couldn't complete it. Or maybe he/his agent want more money. I don't want to sound arrogant but for Torreira coming to Arsenal should be a big deal, for the life of me I cannot imagine him thinking 'hmmm, I can do better if I do well at the world cup'. He just doesn't have that profile and I don't think we've stooped that low just yet.

Also he'll be on a decent salary compared to what he earns in Italy.

I'm sure there are club's who will try and sign the best performers from the World Cup, however those clubs (I'm thinking about PSG or Real Madrid) are unlikely to get excited by the performance of a deep lying midfielder and are much more likely to sign an attacking player based on their WC performances and Torreira does not fit that profile.

And if PSG want a nippy 5ft 6 ball winning midfielder there's a much more obvious candidate with a lot more pedigree.

Unless he wants to leave because of being called fat and generally wanting to leave last summer as well. Having said that, if anyone is going to knock us over, more likely to be Juve than anyone else, I would think. Chelsea already have someone better, not City's type, Y***ted are stocked, Pool just bought 2, Atletico have a full MF and not the profile for RM / Barca / PSG. Maybe Bayern want him?

Lots of problems in that XI.

Question marks about so many; are Leno, Sokratis and Torreira going to hit the ground running, are they up to it even if they do?

It would take an unilikely turnaround for Mustafi to play at the heart of a defence that is good enough for the 80 points we should be aiming for. Bellerin has shown previously he has a higher level in him, so I'm hopeful he'll be alright. Monreal is creaking in my opinion and I'm not sure how much he has in him for next season, and Kolasinac has shown very little in an Arsenal shirt to reassure.

In midfield, Ramsey still hasn't signed and is also very likely to miss 10-15 games through injury. Xhaka acting as the main passer and controller in midfield did not work well for us in either of the previous two seasons. Maybe he has more than he has shown but I'm not hopeful.

Özil playing wide reduces his ability knit our attack together and also puts more pressure on him to contribute with goals and to do a good job of protecting his fullback--neither of which are playing to his strengths. Mkhitaryan being asked to contribute as a regular goalscorer is not something I'm happy about. He's about as flaky and inconsistent as they come. Aubameyang is as good as it gets so no complaints up front.

I think we should still be looking for a centreback to replace Mustafi and a midfielder to compete with Xhaka. And someone to light a fire under Mkhitaryan as well. Reiss Nelson could be that guy but realistically he'll need longer. It's too much to ask the club to fix all our problems in one window though so we'll have to make do in some cases. I still think we have a signing or two in us after Torreira though...

Valid points (disagree on Kolasinac but that's another topic) but I think that line up is better than it may look at first to be honest. But we won't know until we see it in action so all we really have to fall back on is current impressions. Also, United got 81 points with this team:

De Gea

Valencia - Smalling - Jones - Young

Matic - Pogba

Martial - Lingard - Sanchez

Lukaku

Not going to go into a like for like comparison exercise because it's pointless. But as an XI, you could pick just as many holes in this line-up as you could ours and De Gea is really the only aspect of that line up propping it up.

I mean, the biggest unknown is the quality of the coaching and tactics. If that's up to par then that group is certainly good enough for top four (although no where near challenging for the title).

i dont think Torreira will start the season on the pitch. Depending on how far Uruguay go in the WC, he won't have a proper pre-season with us, so it will take him a few weeks to get up to speed with how Emery is going to want us to play

Our group is nothing special but certainly still good for top 4 if the coach is up for it, so I agree with this point.

Get top 4, then sign the star players. Now let's try to make do with these average joes first.
