4222 has no place for Ramsey. 42222 needs to AMS and two DMs, Ramsey fits nowhere in that formation. You need proper DMs because you are depending on flying fullbacks. This Ramsey riddle gives me a headache
However that does not mean that the roles of the players need to be the same - in fact they shouldn't be.
If Rambo can play an effective role as past of a 2 behind the CF for Wales at the EC then he should be able to do so for us. That said it is noticeable that Wales are using him as CAM in a 4231 of late, and I wonder if it is a case of same position but a different role for club v country?
IIRC the Brazil team from WC'82 retained a central spine through the middle whilst the 'other' player in each pairing played a freer role to add width and numbers to the attack. Whilst we obviously lack the quality of the players in that team IMO we have similar types that can be utilised in a similar manner in terms of roles, even whilst retaining the 4231/4213 as Emery wants to create & use width as part of the tactical approach and style.
For example:
Lacazette - Serginho
PEA/Mkhi - Eder
Ozil - Zico
Rambo - Socrates
Xhaka - Cerezo
Torreira - Falcao
Not exact replicas but close enough in terms of roles.
From what I remember watching, Serginho would stay central whilst Eder roamed wide to link with the FBs.
Zico would roam to create whilst Socrates played more like a B2B. Falcao provided the foundation and cover for the CBs whilst Cerezo looked to set the tempo as DLP.
