It's not just German football who have treated him like shit. Literally every major or minor newspaper, major or minor politicians called him rat, traitor, fascist sympathiser, goat fucker, Turkish pig and whatnot, I honestly don't think I've ever seen something like it before in this country.

Özil is a dumb bloke but even if he were smart I'd forgive him for walking in the one direction that has publicly backed him. People think it's a question of backing Erdogan or not but if he disavows him it'd effectively be tantamount to turning his back on his second home country.

True, and these things are never as black and white as people make it. But it's one thing to take a picture with Erdogan because he was there and it's another thing to invite him to your wedding and make him your best man.

Who knows maybe Özil secretly thinks Erdogan is the bees knees and did nothing wrong. But to lay the blame solely at his door after everything that preceded this situation feels wrong to me

The crap that was coming from Hoeness & Co was perhaps too easily dismissed as trying to divert blame from their Bayern players, & I was glad to see their international careers ending before the next major tournament.

Arsenal's backing was lukewarm with the bare minimum any club would say about any player and not forthcoming till years later.

I have no idea how the Turkish community reacted but his actions since make Jones' suggestion more plausible than yours, to me.

In any case, sitting on the bench/reserves while your club is actively pushing you out just for the sake of collecting wages requires cynicism. Ozil doesn't strike me as being such. I think he is averse to hostility, just want to enjoy life/football on his own terms and feel appreciated. So I think he would accept a somewhat lower wage if it meant moving to a nice location with lower demands. Regular playing time will help him in terms of personal sponsors/endorsements which will undoubtedly dwindle if he continues to be a peripheral player here, so it would offset a lower weekly wage. I hope some MLS team like LA Galaxy will make an offer.

He’d get the same level of scrutiny in the MLS. Probably anywhere in the world he goes now, the narrative is set, and he hasn’t helped dispel it.

I'm the same but would include Mustafi in that. Those guys getting moved on would be a big step in the right direction and every day they remain the less optimistic I get about the summer activity.
