Özil these days is just a name. People are still talking about him like he's the same player he was during his first few Real years. He's put in like 3-4 performances in the last year or so that are worthy of his reputation. Mostly he's been shit. Not even average. Just shit. Personally, I can't wait to see the back of him. Talent alone is useless, when the player is mentally(and physically) weak and lacks the inner drive.

I have a lot of time for Emery and think that he should be given another year to see what he does, but I have no doubt in my mind that Ozil (current Ozil, at that) is a more useful player than Iwobi.

If an Arsenal XI with Iwobi was to face up against an Arsenal XI with Ozil I would put my money on the latter without hesitation.

Ozil should play.At number 10 behind the two strikers with 75% responsibility to create and 25% to drop deeper when necessary. He is not the kind of player Emery wants for his specific tactics and the replacements arent up to it so until we get that player or players in the summer surely he must find a way to use our most creative player.

Click into the thread, then click to The Arsenal and read the match threads. Its all the same "its not Ozils fault he was shit" stuff from the people who are now hating Emery for dropping him. He'd been poor for months, people hoped it was form but its turned out to be a permanent decline.

Also, you have to consider the context of his signing- we were in one of our shittiest forms ever under Wenger. We just sold Sanchez to Man U. The future wasn’t looking great, and then Ozil re- signs with us. It was a bright light in really bleak times. Sicario thought he was close to “peak Zizou” eyes rolling. We needed that injection of good news at that time, but his form had started stalling already in my opinion.

Out of curiosity, I checked out the AC Milan match thread which was one of Ozil's best performances last season where he set up two goals at the San Siro to take a temperature of what the mood was as a result:

Honestly I feel like too much of the Ozil discussion revolves around Emery. Ultimately, if we're all honest, he's more than good enough to be starting most games and certainly good enough to at least be on the bench in every game. Everything else should be saved for the summer.

Utd are in a similar boat with Sanchez, extortionate wages for a demotivated player who’s ageing and losing pace, they have Martial to replace him, we have Iwobi... we should have got Malcom in Jan. Would be lucky to get Ozil off our books.

Alexis looks completely finished whereas Ozil while not his best still offers a hell of a lot more than Alexis. A hell of a lot more than most of our players as well.

but seriously, putting in context we'd just lost alexis and there was a fear that there was a mass exodus of players brewing. i also don't think anyone grasped the alleged burden on the wage bill his contract would cause. if you'd told me ozil would re-sign, but it would mean we'd end up turfing rambo and resorting to bargain hunting for the next 12-24 months i'd have been a bit more circumspect
