I'd imagine the potential consequences of refusing Erdogun would have been a greater motivator, not just for his business opportunities or his acceptance in Turkey but also for potential ramifications for his Turkish fiancée.

Regardless, I find it difficult to care in the face of everything he's had to deal with since.

Definitely anyone who got a photo taken with Erdogan was either not very switched on, or maybe switched on the wrong way. Same goes for Gundogan. But if either has made a careful public statement supporting Erdogan that would be much more damning.

In his statement it's implicit that he's backing away from support for Erdogan whether real or apparent, by saying he was honouring his nation not making a political gesture.

The funny thing is that there is relatively more support for Erdogan in Turkish communities in Germany and the Netherlands than in Turkey itself, because Turkish immigrants in those countries are mostly from rural conservative backgrounds. So I doubt that this is what he meant by his statement, but it's all speculation. Either way I think he's a git, but as long as he has a good season it's all good 😉

Yeah, Ozil is not stupid. But then again he wouldn't have imagined that much backlash with just a photo.

Nah Ozil seems like on of the smart ones. I think he sees football as a job first and foremost and he manages his finances well.

Even if you do not grow up speaking more than one language it's pretty hard to grasp that there are many people who had a formal education and still have no real command over any single language. Like do you think in fucking pictures and onomatopoeia or how do you function.

Well memes, given the media we use to communicate, are something akin to a rich, nuanced word or phrase level unit of language.

The way kids and young adults communicate online these days impresses me, the smart ones are on a level I struggle to reach. Not that I think Özil is in that category!

Does he actually mean that there is no racism within the NT, i.e. the players/staff are not racist to each other? That could be an appropriate statement to make for someone who is part of the set up.
