He may not have been the worst technically, but given his profile and the cost to acquire him he’s been a huge limiter on our progress. Granted that sits with management but nonetheless it’s the case

This, it's not even unforeseen. Everything about lacazette we've known for seasons. He's not a goalscorer and he offers no threat. So that decision was taken eyes open, we knew that and we choose to take that path. I think that's pretty reckless and clearing Auba out when we had nothing else was not a great decision. But Arteta has also done his usual approach of playing a player that clearly isn't working presumably because he "trusts" him which seems to be the primary driver over contribution to the effectiveness of the team.

Moving the goalposts or what! I’ll let you off as I know yesterday was very frustrating for all of us.

For what it’s worth, Laca has been better for us than Giroud was. Ironically Giroud prob better than Laca since he left us but that’s a different conversation.

No way is that even slightly true. I actually like Laca but Giroud was a better striker for us than Laca has been.

The only time Laca has been a better striker is if you compare their time in France but at Arsenal, even at his shittest, missing chances left right and centre, he still outscored Laca's best scoring season for us in all but two of his full season's at the club. And even then he was within 3 goals of Laca's best scoring season at the club. Both in overall terms, and purely PL terms.

Only caveat I'd add is that Giroud played for a team that was creating quite a few more chances than what we have now.

I've said it a lot this season, but for me, the idea that he will leave at the end of the season and I won't have to watch him struggle to play football ever again is one of the positives of the seasons. Whoever made the call that we should go with him as a starter from January should get sacked no questions asked.

Nah, Laca also played under Wenger and still couldnt match Giroud.

Also 😆 at our worst. I thought Arteta saved us from our worst under Wenger/Emery.

It is absolutely embarrassing for a club to have someone as bad as him this 2 seasons to be leading the line.

Reading back this thread, almost no one rates him as a player. Only bringing up invisible things like leadership skills, supposedly big game form etc to rate him.

Even when he joined he was so far beneath the required level for a Champions League striker. It took Wenger a couple of months to realise the scouts had done him dirty and then get Sven in to help him break the transfer record for Aubameyang instead.

Since then he's mostly been described as "being hardworking", "making an effort", "acting like a leader", "showing up in the big games", and any other platitudes that people resort to using when they can't just point out someone's actual quality on account of it being too low. It was a bit of a joke that he got the player of the season award the same year we had another striker in the team who actually won the golden boot in Premier League, but that's how fans work. They get taken in by that "playing with your heart on your sleeve" stuff. There's no excuse whatsoever for managers to fall into the same trap though.

I don't get taken in by that blood and thunder nonsense and I also thought he was our best player that season, Auba outscored him but Lacazette was more influential, not as massive a gap between them as you'd think one had 32 G/A the other 39. Auba getting POTS would've been okay too but it's not outrageous to give Laca credit for his link up play which Auba never offered for us.

All these discussions are missing the point though. Lacazette might or might not be good enough can be a matter of opinion, what isn't is he's physically beyond shot and still being run into the ground every single match day. Both mentally and physically the number Arteta's done on him is criminal.

Laca is 31 not 41 and he plays once a week.

The alternative is who? Eddie who hasn’t scored one goal this season in the league.

Wild man Pepe as number 9 when after 3 years has yet to figure out his own position? Who else?

Arteta’s mistake was not signing a striker in Jan but Laca still the best option. It is what it is.

Eddies played 166 minutes, hasn't started a single game. I don't rate him that highly these days but its a big disingenuous to say "oh he has no league goals", especially when Laca has managed 2 non-penalty goals in 1700 minutes.

Yeah, I'm not sure you can blame Arteta for Lacazette not being up to the job physically, you can blame him for picking him every week though.
