Agree with most of your other reservations but disagree on this point. Arteta and Per came into the club at our lowest ebb following the 8-2 defeat and turned things around in the dressing room. In fact, the collapse we see now may have been averted if we had more personalities like them in the squad.

It's true that Arteta isn't as talented as some other players but there's no 'stench' about him imo - his whole career is a testament to getting the most out of your talent and seeking out new opportunities. In some respects the likes of Henry and Vieira have no experience of that 'struggle' in any of their careers given that they've lived a charmed life.

Agreed - both are/were consummate professionals as players despite any shortcomings.
Don't see why Arteta should be tainted in any way despite being captain during the stagnation ahead of the demise.
Without him I suspect our demise may have happened earlier and possibly have been more dramatic.

Almost every single so called ITK on twitter is putting their heads out and said Arteta is a done deal now. What is not so clear is who is his assistant with strong rumours being Xabi.

Theoretically those 2 players were really intelligent and have plenty of experience working with many big managers. Could be an inspired combination, although I would really prefer someone with so much experience like Buvac helping Arteta.

Bould likely to be off as he can't work under someone who he coached just 2 years ago.

i made the argument in favor of someone like arteta about 15 pages ago, so i guess those points are valid. its a pretty uninspiring hire on the face of it, since he has no managerial experience, but we dont know how he will approach things, how he will handle adversity, etc. he might actually be amazing, or he might be a disaster. we have no idea.

i hope the recruiting team is ready for this summer, i hope we act quickly on our targets, and i hope we clear out the dead weight at the club.

And that's going to be particularly hard given there's a world cup.

We absolutely have to wrap up our business in advance of the season starting, I don't think Arteta (if he's appointed) will be able to control the media and the pressure if things start badly.

I just don't understand how Gazidis & CO can recruit well known and experienced guys to scouting/recruiting, contracting, fitness, health, etc., but skimp on manager position which is basically the most important. If the idea is to have a manager of very limited role (with great input from others), then what's left for a manager? Game/man management and training sessions, nothing really more. Both areas where hiring novices like Arteta is just a stupid idea. They might have seen how others do that, but seeing and actually delivering is two completely different things.

Also I think we need to bear in mind that Arteta is very much a well known quantity at Arsenal, in terms of his personality, his intangible qualities like his presence and charisma and shrewdness.

They wouldn't be considering his appointment if they thought he was too frail mentally or was seriously deficient—they must really rate him. It's highly likely they will have consulted Wenger about him as well.

I'm not altogether thrilled by the ambition on show, but I prefer this approach to appointing some veteran Premier League manager, like Moyes to United, or some wunderkind from a lesser league, like AVB to Chelsea, or even some old warhorse of fantastic pedigree like Pellegrini.

I do think the whole situation proves beyond a doubt how dumb it was to allow Wenger to hang around long enough to preside over us sliding out of the Champions League.

There were ample moments when he could have walked and been replaced with a high profile trophy winner with ease, now we'll have Mikel Arteta tasked with getting us back into the top four on a shoestring. I hope he's up to the job because I'm not going to be enthused by another season of undisciplined mediocrity.

That's precisely the reason why I still have some doubt remaining about it actually being Arteta. A full clear out of the current staff without replacing all of them doesn't fit appointing a complete novice for the top job

My other concern is whether Arteta will be able to attract big names through the transfer window.

I imagine most top players will give us a miss since we're not in the CL, may not have a coach with a reputation to improve talent and won't be throwing obscene money at them to make up for the first two points.

Don't think that will make much difference going forward. By my reckoning, Auba will probably be our last 'big' signing for some time. We're going to try to extract maximum value through our academy and younger signings going forward.

I think you're right but we already tried that approach in 2006 and it didn't work.

I'm all for promoting youth but sometimes you got to drop £80m on a striker!

I don’t know about that, I think we were a lot closer to the top with the youth policy than we are now. I think following the Dortmund/Monaco model, but with better player retention and more ambitious aquisition will work well for us.

I think we’ll still go big when we can personally, especially if we lose someone.

The independent reckon Santi might be offered a player/coach role. I don’t think I’d have the heart to ever sack Santi.

worked a helluva lot better than what's been going on since 2014 and the big money signings. dortmund/monaco model with a 200+m wage bill is much better than these overrated 30+m signings. yeah we should sprinkle in an elite big money signing here and there since we'll have the money, but most of our lineup should have come here as cream of the crop 19-22 year olds or from the academy.

the thing that is most interesting to me is how our actual coaching changes with wenger gone. steve bould was a rock of a centerback and was a reliable defender, it was apparently his job to help coach the defense, but our defense was shocking while he was here. was it because he was a bad coach? was it because he wasnt allow to coach them how he wanted? will the new manager bring in specialized coaches and give them autonomy to coach their particular areas?
