I have to say I don't pay much attention to rumours. I know we've tried to offload Walcott for the past two summers without success. We tried to get rid of several players last summer but it was the same story there, either their wages were unappealing or the clubs that were in for them didn't match their ambitions.

I don't think that's true. He's been doing the job of 2-3 people for a decade. It's not because he's authoritarian, it's because the club organisation is a mess and it's been too convenient to dump everything on his doorstep.

I'm not saying Wenger isn't flawed. I'm just saying it's easy to see why he dislikes the January window so much, or why we're so slow to sign players in general. It's not like Wenger personally sits down and makes offers at every negotiation, handles agents and club contacts, and so forth. The circus surrounding transfers has grown into a whole industry while we've been perpetually understaffed and relied on an increasingly outdated scouting organisation (which in a desperate attempt to keep up started to spend big on dubious statistical analysis software) to identify targets.
