IIRC he was given a new deal by Emery in pre-season - one of the first actions he made re the squad along with the new deal for AM-N.

Realise that it would not have been done on his say so alone, but I was assuming that it was done with his endorsement.

guys are going to be extended and sold whether the manager likes them or not because the execs have to make sure we don't have these running down contract situations season after season. even if a player like xhaka will be offered up for sale, you need toextend him before you're offering him silly money or selling on the cheap because he only has one year left.

We've been missing this guy's contributions (though perhaps not his cockups). All the more reason to buy someone of a similar capacity without the senderosity. Neves is one but I'm sure there's more.

Mustafi is clearly our worst signing ever, £35m, at least Xhaka doesn’t mess up EVERY game, he’s more a 1 in 3 ratio.

I think Xhaka still has a perception overhang from last season. He's done much better in terms of the missteps this season. He's generally been a solid citizen. Hoe many mistakes does he make relative to, say, our strikers who have a habit of taking air shots right in front of goal? His mistakes are just more visible and memorable because they have immediate negative consequences that leave the most volatile of us breaking tables. Think about all the insane errors we made going forward yesterday. I believe we judge these players less harshly because a) consequences are less and b) they can more easily bounce back with goals and assists

I can imagine a title winning team with Xhaka playing a (limited) role in it.

I cannot imagine a title winning team ever featuring Mustafi.

12/13's winning Manchester United team had Carrick playing with one of Cleverly, Anderson and a 38 years old Scholes all season so the Xhaka part should be very possible.

Yeah. I agree with this. A high quality team can include Xhaka. Mustafi would sabotage any team. Even Barcelona would find all of Messi's efforts negated on a daily basis. I don't think he has an off switch

Bottom line is that poor players can be part of any winning side, but you have a much better shot at winning and playing good football in general when you upgrade the worst ones first. We don't exactly have a Carrick to pull Xhaka around.

Nah, Xhaka is the least of our problems. I won't even think of selling him as of current status. Sell Elneny and add to our options.

The question raised after the performance H v Napoli = do we need Xhaka as a starter in a 2 CM midfield if we have both Torreira and Rambo (or a like for like replacement)?

Even though i would prefer better in the middle of the park, he is the best we have so good luck to him.
