That's true. At international level Xhaka gets a lot more time on the ball than in the league and he really thrives under those conditions.

It can't just be that as they have been going deep into tournaments for years so must be coming up against tactical managers.
Even when he was abominable for us, under Wenger, he performed well for Switzerland and that's without counting "hit and hope" efforts with his swinger. They must have devised a way to utilise him better and (sorry Flobs!) get someone else to do the tackling/running in midfield.

I think he is seen as a leader there. While at arsenal he was seen as a bit of a clown in the changing room. Liam Brady spoke about it on Irish TV ages ago.

Would be interesting to learn who thought of him as a clown, and who's considered a leader then

His comment was at the end of xhakas first season here. He just mentioned that in Germany he was the leader. And at arsenal nobody took him seriously and he really struggled with that. He said he reckoned he'd be off in a year or two if he wasnt a leader in the team.

I recall watching him play for the national team around the WC and he was paired with the ball winner DM/CM who used to play for Watford when the regained PL status. I also recall reading something similar about his time at BMG under Favre, whereas AW seemed determined to play him without having a serious ball winner or defensive role to balance.
What I don't recall is if Xhaka played the deeper role or if he played alongside or advanced of his midfield partner/s.

He's usually been paired with a proper DM and played just a bit further forward than he is being used with us. He is never going to be the kind of defensive midfielder we need. With Ramsey gone we need to find a proper DM if Torreira isnt going to be good enough , and let Xhaka play with a bit more freedom

Xhaka has actually been pretty decent this season in fairness, just needs to be paired with someone who can do the running and tackling (Torreira). The extra width in our game and the prevalence of wing play in general also helps, creates less congestion in the middle and gives him more outlets to hit.

I'm not sure that Torreira is meant as being the deepest / holding / screening midfielder, as opposed to being an upgrade on the ball winning role played by Coquelin for Emery's high pressing game. As such I think he's an offensive / front foot player as seen v Fulham rather than playing as the deepest CM, and therein lays our issue re balancing the midfield.

Maybe, but if Xhaka is going to play for us he cannot be counted on as defensive cover.

Doesn't sound like him, from whatever little we know of him. Also, it's reported in CalcioNapoli - wouldn't put it past them to make stuff up, especially 2 days before a quarter-final.
