I'm not sure of racial undertones because the media loved him when he was at Liverpool. As soon as he left, the full force of the pro Liverpool media rounded on him and very much ended up making him a target.
Indeed, by contrast, Chamberlain got back into everyone's good books by turning down Chelsea and going to Liverpool. His performances have also improved but that's happened more recently but he definitely got a lot more support from the start.
