I think "gas station attendant" may have been setting the ceiling a little low for, you know, an average highly athletic man with pushy parents.
Anyone we would think of as a "failed footballer" is still a pretty successful footballer by any measure I know. I mean, no one's calling me a "failed footballer" because I used to play socially twice a week!
Other than that I think they'd just be normal guys. You see it with the AFL retirees in Australia, they often go on to manage shops or do low-level business consulting etc. Sometimes they go into media if they're famous or charismatic enough.
