I still can't wrap my head around the idea that footballers aren't required to get jabbed. My workplace requires it. What gives?

I thought the case was rather that all of them haven't been offered it yet? If they have I agree, but would be weird if just some could get the vaccine and they were allowed to play while the others couldn't.

Ah. I keep hearing the Podcasters and coaches talk as if it could be required but you can't for ethical reasons. If it's a legal thing it makes more sense I guess. Do you not have to be vaccinatedto go to school in Europe?

Pre-schools can ask for it but not primary and secondary.

Yea that's an entirely different world to over here, where vaccinations of all sorts are required at every level of education and for employees of those institutions.

Strange. The idea that it is a personal choice seems so American, and yet...

Yeah, there's no legal requirement over here (UK) at the moment. There will be a vaccination requirement for nightclubs by the end of September once all the under 25s get their second doses but that's about it for now. I think ultimately it's not a political issue which helps massively.

A game which trialled limited and no heading. With further evidence emerging of brain damage caused by heading the ball this may become more of an issue. In the first half they allowed heading from free kicks and corners but not goal kicks or punts, so the ball had to bounce. Arsenal fans are occasionally used to that anyway.

In the second half there was no heading at all, which seems to have been quite boring.

I can see limits coming in in the future. It's already happening in kids training.

As a side note I think rugby is now trying to limit contact training to 15 minutes per session. That will be impossible to monitor. The Wallabies coach has already said he doesn't really bother.

If coaches and clubs disregard these kinds of things, there will come a point when someone gets sued and that will eventually lead to everyone taking it seriously. Most changes in football have happened through the courts, so why not one more I guess.

Shane Duffy has been playing nicer football out from the back than any of our defenders this season. 😆

Anyway they can fuck off with this shit. It'll be a completely different game than the one we grew up with if they keep changing things like this. Just inform people of the risks and let them make up their own mind.

I think they believe they won't be able to make up their mind once the dementia sets in. BWooley is right - now that links are being established it's only a matter of time before they bring in changes to protect players' health. It's happening already in some sports.

If you just say heading is not permitted from the long kicks but is ok off corners, crosses etc then that should be fine. As I said earlier it will make for some excitement when the goal kicks and punts are allowed to bounce / skid through etc.

Well you don't let them make decisions when they have dementia you let them make the decision when they are in full health. Humans engage in all sorts of potentially dangerous and damaging activities, as long as they are aware of the risks I don't see the problem.

The stuff in the NFL was more of an issue, where the league had a "race-normed" approach to compensating the significant number of ex-players with cognitive deficiencies that assumed the African-American ex-pros were stupider to start with.

As Big Q points out so long as there's informed consent at the top level I question whether there's any fundamental issue. But that consent could or should also be on both sides with clubs and associations taking on a proportion of risk. It's up to players to support each other and make that happen.

Heading rules should absolutely not be changed at the top level of the sport. I understand it for children, and it will naturally make heading a less featured part of football if you don't grow up doing it, but unless there are some much stronger cases made it would be crazy to change the laws in the professional game.

If heading in football shouldn't be allowed, then plenty of sports in general shouldn't be either.

Do you see it much with your team Coombs at kids level? My young lads team don't train it at all because they are told not to by the FAI but recently we played a team and they were whipping in corners for the head against us, took them completely by surprise and they scored a couple before the coaches could get our kids to adjust.
