We are always playing catch up when it comes to transfers. If there is one thing Wenger has done consistently in his time here is short change the squad. I can't remember a single season where we have had a complete squad. That summer we only signed Cech, that damage then takes more than one window to repair.
Invincibles season.. after that, nope...

Even that season was a freak in terms of injuries, we were able to keep the majority of our first XI fit for the entire season. We didn't have that much depth and that is what cost us from winning the FA Cup and CL. Come the latter stages our players were dead on their feet, the PL title was won by then but look at our games against Man Utd & Chelsea and our players just couldn't match them for energy.
If anything the only season where we did have depth was 01/02 where we did have a lot of injuries/suspensions and kept going.
Even the 98 double winning season was won by a very small core of top players.
The rest of the squad were extremely average and were immediately out of the Premiership the moment we got rid.
We sold Overmars and Petit and we, duly, ran out of stream towards the end of the 99 season gifting manu a hallowed treble.
We signed Pires to cover Overmars but a Petit-sized hole remained in midfield till we got Gilberto after the 2002 World Cup.
I remember Vieira, repeatedly, questioning the club's ambition in his protracted contract negotiation for several years after this.

Resident buffoon, Peter Hill-Wood, got involved and "incredibly" blamed Vieira for not continuing to win with an inferior squad.

fungus loved this and put his oar in to try to destabilise us more.

Luckily the spuds gifted us Campbell and we, subsequently, won the double.
Again Wenger defaulted to his usual non-investment in quality and we lost the following year.
He, finally, digs into the coffers and buys a Petit replacement in Gilberto and after adding a bit more quality, (Reyes), the "Invincibles" were created.
Of course he reverts to type the following season and the team comes up short in that semi-final at the chavs.
By 2005, the team was running on fumes and fluked the FA Cup but fell short in the CL final against barca as we entered the post-Highbury barren era that all of you are familiar with.
