I don't subscribe to the theory that a wingback has to be little more than a glorified fullback. I want players there that can make a difference in the final third as well as contribute more to our possession in the middle third. Otherwise just go with fullbacks and a back 4. I hope Wenger saw what Chamberlain contributed from RWB and now sees what quality you can get into the side via those two positions. And that is why he's after Lemar, but I doubt that's the case. I think he could be a real weapon for us in that position though, and he's quick enough, energetic enough and hard working enough that I think he'd hold his own when we dont have the ball as well. Exhibit A:
yeah i think this is right. our system is a 3-4-3 more than a 5-2-1-2. in a 5 ATB, you play fullbacks out wide. in a 3 ATB, you play midfielders out wide. 3-4-3 is more ambitious attacking wise, but we can partially offset that by playing a recognized defender (bellerin) at RM and someone like lemar at LM. if you want to rest lemar, you can play kolasinac at LM and ox at RM. having 3 centerbacks who stay back and defend shuts off odd man counterattacks, which means our 7 midfielders and forwards and attack more and provide more width. as long as lemar is willing to track back when we lose the ball, i dont see the issue at all, tbh. no one is saying he has to be marcelo, but as long as he shows a solid workrate, i think he'd be great as a LM. he has an amazing left foot and is a great crosser of the ball. having genuine width will help our front 3 immensely.
