Also - how come some cities, in particular New York, were able to reduce gun crime over the past three decades? And why couldn't that be replicated across the country?

They're inspiring, aren't they. Those kids are filling the vacuum of leadership in the public interest.

Doesn't even take much for them to do it: just demand what is sensible based on what they saw with their own eyes.

Yes it's very encouraging to see. My own experience with Gen Z (as a parent and teacher) suggests they're not too intersted in formal politics, but very interested in social issues. Let's hope this can translate into something bigger.

Sign of the times, don't you think? It's almost as if formal politics hasn't achieved anything much that's positive in their lifetimes, but the problems that need fixing are very visible.

Yep I think that's pretty much it. I've definitely noticed this trend (albeit a very small and specific sample) in some of the things we do at work with 1st year undergrad students. And I've certainly noticed it qith my eldest daughter and her peers.

The thing is, I don't think they are. I think it's just the level of the debate itself that is so embarrassingly low elsewhere. Or the fact that it's even a debate after all these years. American media outlets have failed the US almost as badly as their politicians when it comes to guns.

I agree generally but I'd argue that it's very specific social issues which are prevalent in those discussions and certain others which are virtually completely blanked. I'm not as hopeful as you are though, some vague and fleeting interest in identity politics related issues, preferably on social media - which is, if we're being completely honest, what we're talking about - will never change anything of meaning.

That plus a rational, albeit awful desire to protect and restore social structures that have guaranteed relative advantage for whites in the US throughout its history.

Personally I don't think whiteness votes Trump because it expects to be Trump, it does because Trump has ceaselessly signalled his support for a New Jim Crow. To get elected he literally toured the South hinting at Confederate restoration and heaping fear and scorn on migrants. MAGA is New Deal grand bargain stuff, and like FDR's program is shot through with race politics.

It's one thing to argue the incentive Trump offers his constituency is a stupid, and misplaced faith in the Great American Dream. But I'd say it's more marginal, local and cynical than that, it's about voting for the guy who says he'll give you the few per cent you've been accustomed to having.
