The music scene seems to be going the way of being alternative. What I mean by that is you don't really have so many routine RnB bands wearing routine clothes (or do you? I don't watch MTV anymore or follow the charts).

Just checked Janelle Monae out on youtube and her style and music would be seen as outlandish in many parts of the RnB and Soul scene. At least 10 years ago it would be scene as alternative. You've got Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Jessica J among others changing the fashion styles. This Monae girl has some decent tracks.

It is seen as very outlandlish. Her live show is different to anything I've seen too. Definitely go and see her live if you have the opportunity too, the HMV Institute has it's obvious faults as a stage but she still put on one helluva show.

Also, I wouldn't say Janelle is comparable to any of the artists you've named mate.

I'll make sure I check Lina out.

Not in terms of musical style. But in terms of outlandish fashion and trying to be alternative.

Not really Tone, Outkast for instance have been doing that sort of thing for ages.

RnB and Soul, as seen by the masses, is basically pop music which is why it is trendy. There are and have been loads of artists doing different things outside of that for as long as I can remember.

Something I've rediscovered of late. Don't care what anyone says, think it's a brilliant track. You can tell it's been produced by a film director (beyond the obvious story-telling element) just by the way that Luhrmann tries to sonically illustrate the prose.

The kid singing in the extended version is awesome too.

Watched George Clinton live 2 months ago. Still knows how to rock a party. He seemed a bit high for the first half hour of the show, but then he let loose with hits like Atomic Dog. Was a privilege to see him.

That's awesome Cali. I'd pay good money to see him but I doubt he makes it out to Australia often.

Speaking of 70s-ish African-American stuff I saw Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings before Christmas, and that was a really incredible show. Would recommend them blind to anyone.

I noticed Hawkwind are doing a limited dates tour of the Australian east coast at the moment. Would love to catch that but I'm going to miss it unfortunately.

I've bought tickets to see Crystal Fighters and Cee Lo Green next month.

I am fully aware Cee Lo isn't going to do any of his Gnarls Barkley or Goodie Mob stuff but I will cream my pants if he does.

Went to see Les Savy Fav on Friday night at Birmingham Sound Bar. You will not see a more entertaining band, or frontman live. So fucking good.

Saw Joanna Newsom touring for Have One On Me last night. Harp, mixed vocals, multi-instrumentalist/guitarist, percussionist, trombonist and two violins. Ridiculously good show.

She's arguably the best songwriter currently recording albums, I would say.

Absolutely spellbinding show at London's Troxy on Monday night, so good thatshe got away with not talking to the audience till the encore.

I also, finally, got to see The National live (and in the flesh!) last week. What a show, it was well worth the wait. I didn't even mind that they didn't play Mistaken For Strangers!

I was wondering what was on at the Troxy. The kebab shop was packed and there were hundreds of 'weirdos' walking around.

That's exactly how the guy in the Fish bar described them!

You generally have a feel for the night depending upon who is hanging around outside of the kebab shop; Shirts, beer bellies and east 17 haircuts - MMA. Short skirts, long coats, heels - some sort of random club night although the girls seem to wear this to MMA too. Hoodies, painfully tight jeans, Dr.Marten's, backpacks - concert. Then you have the odd wedding or presentation.

The concert goers generally seem to take the train so I can see them as I walk past Limehouse station which is handy as I can call the kebab shop to be ready for when I get there. The MMA fans all drive SUVs or BMWs and mostly come in from essex.

Friday night events get a little tetchy sometimes when you throw the random groups of drunk asian lads into the mix but it is mostly harmless otherwise.
