Seen James on their 40th anniversary tour at Royal Albert Hall last week. They've reworked a huge backlog of songs with an orchestra and choir to mark the occasion. Absolutely blown away by it. The two gigs in the run up were cancelled due to the singer losing his voice to a virus so I think in the end the relief of it going ahead added to everything. I'm still getting hairs standing on end listening to songs they played last week and reliving it.

I don't think they're a very fashionable band outside their core support but they're easily the best band I've seen live. The connection with the crowd is something else. I defy anyone to see them at one of their own gigs and not be enthralled in it even if the songs aren't familiar.

I saw them do a few songs when Baddiel & Skinner did an Unplanned event around the 2010 World Cup. They've never really grabbed me, but I remember being blown away by Tim Booth's voice and they did a song, Getting Away With It All Messed Up, which I thought was brilliant.

Obviously, they finished with Sit Down, which triggered memories of first year at uni discos and being compelled to, um, down sit on dirty, sticky floors...

One of the all time classic life stories of a woman eclipsing her controlling ex-partner, heh. Can't say I was a big fan, I was stuck associating her with a cringeworthy promotion campaign for rugby league in Australia in the 80s (she did a version of "Simply the Best" with local legend Jimmy Barnes).

Sacrilege Burnsy - the Simply The Best campaign was exactly what it said - brilliant marketing, and a bloody good song too. Rugby league though, bleurgh.

We Don't Need Another Hero is also a great song.

Asterix plus can you even imagine a school disco, wedding or multitude of other daggy events without an obligatory Nutbush City Limits? I think not. Respect.

I've now become the kind of person who listens to classical music in the gym - okay, so it was the soundtrack to season two of Succession, but still... Kind of a weird experience. 😁

I went through a phase (long since over, however: the waterproof players at the time were too dodgy and kept having issues) of listening exclusively to Romantic or 19C chamber music for strings on headphones while swimming laps. I'd often do Debussy, Ravel, Franck, three full sonatas for an hour or so of swimming.

There's something to be said for it, it's a great moment to appreciate music that is a bit different, compared to either working (when you need whatever soothes and doesn't distract) or hanging out (when you usually prefer something actively pleasing, fun or familiar) …

Daz apparently doing the Madison to Nutbush was a very Aussie thing - started in the late 60s or early 70s to get dance into the PE curriculum. At our Year 6 end of year dance we learnt the Madison to the Nutbush, the Penguin to Popcorn, and all the barn dances.

If you want to get a feel for the musical sphere Tina Turner came from, the backing vocals documentary 20 FEET FROM STARDOM is really great. It's got quite a big section on Claudia Lennear who was one of the absurdly talented Ikettes.

Asterix yeah I remember constantly having to do a bunch of those dances (barn dances, old English dances, nutbush etc) in PE in both primary and high school. I recall when the Queen came to our regional town in 1988 a whole bunch of kids from local schools (me included) even spent weeks practising dances to perform for her. I don't think the nutbush was included that day though!

Was at a Darwin karaoke session on Friday night (I pretty much nailed "Free Fallin'" with some lyrical variations, if you're wondering).

A Larrakia woman with big hair who was probably pushing seventy came out and did a storming tribute to Tina that had Dolly's going off.

Just wasted most of a day at work trying to get Taylor Swift tickets. My daughters have seen her before and we didn't hold out much hope - still annoying.

Asterix I’ve been informed by the other half that UK tickets go on sale the first day we’re on holiday. I’m adamant our entire day won’t be wasted.
