Yep. To the point that Rolling Stone treat new Public Enemy albums the same way they treat new work by ageing rockers and give it a decent review no matter what.

Q Magazine shuttered a few months ago so I guess the era of "greatest ever lists" is on the way out too.

The idea of "generations" of music that are shared between loads of people has gone by the wayside since cheap digital access to most music became ubiquitous. Fine by me, I wouldn't mind never hearing about the Beatles or the Stones ever again‚ or at least only when I think of them.

The whole situation has also been creating weird resurgent miniature vogues for old and half-forgotten bands like Steely Dan lately.

Nevermind doing a list including all styles of genres let alone genres is a futile exercise that list is particularly embarrassing.
All UK or US releases, Beatles 2x Dylan 2x and those rap picks to look hip to the game fuck off. Couldn't even pick the best Radiohead album although having it in a top 20 is a joke anyway

What's your problem with the PE album qs?

Don't think he has a problem with the album itself, but the fact that Rolling Stone will cave and begin praising records that they didn't give the time of day when they first came out.

Nation of Millions? Its one of my favourites. I'm a huge Public Enemy fan. Its more a criticism of Rolling Stone.

I'm not sure Jens. I didn't say the music is bad, but the list to my mind is bad. Like Jones I appreciate that it's futile to make a top list and please everyone, but who is this for? People whose favourite genre is dead old men with guitars? Nick Hornby? I'm not going to miss this kind of list-obsessed music journalism once it dies out, and it's bound to because most of these critics, similar to the artists themselves, are edging closer to retirement and/or death soon.

Yeah I can't disagree, apparently this list was based on hundreds of artists and critics giving their top 50 and then just adding all the scores together. That was always gonna create this sort of mishmash. And of course the act of ranking music, especially across genres, is a fundamentally useless one. Lists are of course every lazy writers dream, but they can have some value to them if done by a single or only a couple of critics who's taste you've come to know and respect.

Interesting list. I wonder what tool they use to give older albums more security in rankings. It sounds like they just polled 300 diverse people presently, which is good for giving greater musical variety to the list. But might also negatively impact older albums.

It seems to agre with NME’s most recent list that Marvin is #1. Such a special album. There’s a few surprises here like no Miles. Not surprised to see more R&B higher because it influences more current music. The rap entries are a bit perplexing other than Fantasy (that said, Kanye is generally over-indexed by RS relative to his peers).

The only time critical lists are any good is when they include some rarity you happen to be familiar with or place some favourite work unexpectedly high, so you feel a smug rush of reassurance, or when they include a bunch of stuff you've never heard of that's actually great.

It could be worse. Much worse. I have 9 of the top 10 albums, so it’s an at least agreeable list.

If you want bad, just go down a list of the best picture nominees and winners of the last 40 or so years. It’s, at points, alarming

Other than Kanye? I could list 200 rap albums from Chicago alone that are better
