Berlusconi was exactly what I was thinking. And yeah I fell the ones here are very performative and the efforts would be better spend organising for womens right here in Ireland. People in the states are rightly worried about Trump hurting the progress they've made on reproductive rights over there but we don't even have those in Ireland yet and our Taoiseach doesn't want women to have them so how about we protest him instead?

I'd look at in terms of these protests re-awakening in women the absolute and urgent need to protect the rights that they do have and push for rights that are denied them.
The "perfomative" nature and the fact that it was Trump who provoked the reaction does not mean that women are not arsed about rights close to home.

Marches are too little too late. Marches and protests are not the political process, and I'm pretty fucking furious with all of these pretentious, self-serving, too-cool-not-to-be-overly-cynical "organizers" who told everyone not to vote because "fuck the system, man".

It's pathetic. I bet none of them vote in midterm elections either.

I think the organisers did a great job and, hopefully it's the start of something, but framing the whole thing as a response to Trump rather than the conditions that led to Trump is the wrong way to challenge the orange one imo. Bet the oversized Dorito enjoys seeing the whole thing framed as him vs the world since it's a lot easier for him to understand.

He actually wants to be revered - that's clear in his pathetic over reaction to SNL sketches and his obsession with the size of the crowd that showed up for his inauguration.

I know a lot of these folks, and they would probably drive you up the wall. Obviously I don't know all of them, but living for the protest is a common issue here, and there is a whole little industry that's been made out of it, whether it's for all the right reasons or not.

They don't get anyone jazzed up about going out and voting, in fact, they actively discourage it and even try to shame people for bothering, as they see it as lending legitimacy to the system.

Obviously Trump's election isn't "the end", but protesting needs to be coupled with political action, not just bitching into the air. I'm cynical about organizers' ability or will to actually engage politically precisely because Trump did get elected.

I just don't see how Trump is a threat to the rights on women in Ireland or England. Like I say the women all around the states are spot on to rise up and try to show they won't let their rights be taken away. I just don't see the point in a March in Galway. Hopefully it might energise the women at it to go out and actually take part in Irish politics.

There were 100s of 1000s marching Coombs, you have to allow for multiple reasons for them doing so and a lot of diversity amongst those marching.

Will these protests be backed up by action and will those who marched become politically active?

Remains to be seen - but I'd think that there is certainly a percentage of those who did who are in this for the long haul - I guess a lot depends on how the strength of the anti-Trump reaction can be shaped into a coherent movement with a real chance of protecting rights and gaining rights.

For the time being I'm happy with what happened yesterday - it was big, loud, serious, funny and a real eff you to the giant Dorito.
That'll do for a start.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean the protesters, I meant the organizers, particularly those who are coming off the legacy of Occupy, and who have pretty well established networks for getting the word out for this sort of thing.

I know this is good, overall, that it's a positive in a sea of negatives, but I find it hard to take, given the numbers of people who are upset about all of this, that this douchecanoe is hovering his Sharpie over some of the most important issues of our time. Blaming Trump for Trump's win doesn't really work, it's your neighbors that fucked you over (and themselves) at the end of the day.

The fascination with how many people showed up for Trump's inauguration is misguided. Trump could have easily handled low turn out by framing the non-issue as most of his support is from rural, blue collar areas where they can't take the day(s) off to attend. Similarly, it's of no surprise that a President who didn't win the popular vote and did poorly in urban cities would have poor attendance.

You don't see how the election, to the most powerful position in the world, of a man who believes that his position of power is a ticket for doing as he pleases to women is not to some degree a threat to women everywhere?
His views are applauded and supported by misogynists worldwide, and the acceptance of the views as locker room banter emboldens those who share them.
We're currently protected by laws against harassment in the workplace, people have worked hard to make it so, we now risk situations where language and behaviour that degrades and hurts seeps back into acceptable usage cos y'know it's just a bit of bantz.

The notion that the main concern of women here and in the UK revolves around rights to abortion ignores a certain reality that most women live in relation to being assaulted and harassed.

I don't get what he is trying to achieve with those tweets. He is making SNL relevant again politically (which it has no right to be). Must be great for ratings or at least YouTube views.

It's not about the laws being changed or repealed - it's about what is classified as harassment and assault, already it's a fraught area where views such as those copper fastened by people who gloss over Trump’s views as banter prevent many from pursuing a case.
And we're only talking about the tip of the iceberg when we're talking about the workplace, which in many cases, is a safer place than home for Irish women.

Saying that Irish women should ignore Trump and what he represents because they should be out there agitating for access to abortion here in Ireland is somewhat condescending, like telling them they need to re-assess their own experiences, re-assess priorities, it's also a little odd to suggest that they can't do both.
