Trump just fired Rex Tillerson and replaced him with Mike fucking Pompeo. The latter's successor as head of the CIA is Gina Haspel, the first woman to reach the top of the agency. She's also known for being in charge of the first waterboarding which the US have used since the War on Terror began, which she promptly applied 83 times in one month on the same prisoner

Funny, I was reading that Tillerson implicitly mentioned Russia this morning in relation to the nerve attack contrary to the WH statement, chuckled to myself that he'll be out of a job soon.

I assume both Pompeo and Haspel will have to get through difficult confirmation hearings, especially Haspel. Pompeo, former House Tea Party member, strong military and law background, little diplomatic experience and hawkish international views, Haspel, considered an effective leader within the CIA but carries a huge black stain due to her major role in interrogation/torture measures. Both will be questioned closely. And I assume that both will be confirmed with the Republican majority on the Senate committees after a tough fight.

Better the enemy that you know, than the one you don't.

Democrats may be relieved to have some Washington establishment in these positions. Pompeo seems relatively well respected though his views certainly differ from Democrats. Right now I would imagine the Democrats are happy to have anyone they know, and individuals who predate Trump, which to some extent may ease concerns they're tied to Russian meddling.

In Trump's statement regarding firing Tillerson he said of Pompeo that they see eye to eye on most issues, which wasn't the case with Tillerson apparently. Not sure having a secretary of state who agrees MORE with Trump is a good thing...

It's insane. I follow Shaun King on twitter and I've seen him rage about these bombs for weeks. It's virtually the only place I've seen anyone talk about it. The little news coverage that has popped up since then mostly seem to be a product of King and other black activists publicly shaming newspapers and tv channels. There's potentially a new Unabomber running around and no one cares.

It’s because of South by.

They can’t afford to let this sort of news out during an event of this magnitude in Austin for obvious reasons. I hope and believe there is investigations ongoing, and the perpetrator is identified and caught soon, but letting this get under the glare of city or state spot light would be like announcing you had a terrorist running loose in Russia during the next World Cup. Very bad for business.
