You're just being pedantic now. But I can play that game too. I said the "likes of", but you knew that already. I read what you said, and I disagree with it- the players we are being linked with are NOT NECESSARY to the improvement of our squad.

Read what I said, and don't just comment on what you think I said.

If I were being pedantic, I would point out that we aren't link with Jenkinson; we signed him months ago. I may even go as far as to point out that I didn't say that we don't need players for the first eleven, if you can find where I did, I'll give you a gold star.

Look at the names on the first page of this forum if you are really struggling to think of players that we have been linked with. Heavily.

Your position that one superstar player will save us is ridiculous and frankly, if that is what your opinion of this team is having watched us for the last three seasons with basically the same players, then there is nothing more to talk about.

Lol. Stop putting words in my mouth. I never said one superstar player would save us. My original assertion is that for me, one superstar player would be preferable, and a better addition to the team than bringing in more average players who only come in to replace or supplement other average players.

To me, we already have a number of "super, super class" players. The likes of Cesc, Van Persie, Nasri and Jack can go toe-to-toe with more or less anything else in our league. And we have a few other players who could get in to that catagory fairly soon-Vermaelen, Chesny, Ramsey. You can never have enough of those exceptional types, but I'd be satisfied if we address more practical areas this summer-a lack of height, a lack of experience, a lack of depth in certain key areas, a lack of leadership etc.

We need to improve the overall quality of the squad. The best way to do that is to sign players of a similar or better level than the current first teamers but that comes at a price and is a question of availability. In the meantime it is important to at least improve the second string and create some competition in the squad.

We need class players and we need squad players who can potentially be class. If we can raise decent money from outgoing players than we are potentially in a strong position to strengthen all areas but it is foolhardy to think that signing a solitary 'superstar' will be anymore beneficial than incremental improvements throughout the team.

I think the most important thing is to create more options within the squad too. We (well, most of us anyway) saw how good Chamakh can be last season when we needed a player that could link play with his back towards the goal, and conversely how ineffective he was when we needed to bring on a goalscorer to finish off a game. We probably would have benefited from having Vela around as the third striker rather than Bendtner in that sense. It was a similar story with the wide positions. Starting with Nasri, Walcott or Arshavin meant that we had players that could decide the game. The odd one out was often a good option to bring on in the second half. Bringing on Gibbs, Rosicky or Bendtner at a time when we needed an extra push, however, meant that we lost some edge instead.

If we can keep Nasri and bring in Gervinho it would mean that we've added options to our attack. To keep Cesc and bring in Alvarez would mean that we've added an option in midfield. The problem so far this summer is that we've looked more likely to lose players than to sign anyone of note, but that could all change very quickly when the window opens.

Klaus, you are absolutely correct that we need options. I agree with you that Chamakh could be very impactful, particularly in the period until last November. I similarly see a role that Gervinho can play in giving us a bit of variety up front.

That said, if we are going to win trophies, we need match-winners. We need as many of the players as we possibly can on the team to be of the van Persie / Cesc level. Men who can be counted on to perform in games big and small.

I think that is an immediate priority. Someone noted that we could blow 40m on a star and then he's injured the next day. I don't advocate spending 40m (20 - 30 should do it), but we should not desist from buying a star out of fear they will get injured the first day. If they are healthy, they can have a bigger impact on our team than 3 or 4 mid-level quality players.

I don't understand Chamakh being impactful. Is that just a wrongly used phrase?

We simply didn't get anywhere near enough from all of our strikers bar Van Persie after Christmas.

We can either get enough from those we have (doubtful) or bring in a better goalscorer. Can't quite place my faith in Gervinho.
