How did van der Wiel do in the big game today? Would you fancy him here, or are you content with Sagna?

van der Wiel would not significantly to improve the team, if at all. No right back (or left back) would.

And on that subject, the second half today was the best I've seen Kieran Gibbs play in AGES. Still not there, but much better.

That's the thing though, for me it's the sort of change you look to make when you've got no real issues anywhere else. And a slight improvement in the full back positions is well down the pecking order for me.

If we buy a quality striker, midfielder, winger, centre back and still have enough money/time to use up on a full back upgrade, then fair enough. But that's not going to happen.

I think the fact that we have two starting fullbacks who can't do anything other than put in a half decent cross, and then only when they have an eternity to line it up, is a big problem. It certainly ranks up there for me.

But how many full backs are there out there that do much more than that? I've seen van der Wiel a few times and while he makes the odd great run down the right to make a telling contribution, it's not exactly been a common occurance.

In a team like ours, where the fullbacks get the most time and space on the ball in the team, there are a lot of players that could contribute more than our two do. A lot more. I'm jealous Spurs have signed Walker for a start.

To be fair, it's nothing we haven't seen from Gael Clichy a thousand times before.

Clichy at his worst is the Clichy we see nearly every week then.

At least Kieran has the excuse that he has barely played any football in the last 18 months (quite a bit more actually now I think about it).

There is a reason they get time and space on the ball, because there is not much you can do from that position.

Players like Walker look good because they get space to attack and don't come up against deep packed defences with very little passing options.

Don't get me wrong, I do think Sagna and Clichy's contribution to our attacking game is poor, but I just don't see it making that much difference to our game, at least not anywhere near the difference a quality striker, winger or midfielder would make.

But for a great Freidel save and a Richard Dunne clearing header, Gibbs could easily have had a goal and assist today, and that's him having barely played any football, out of form, short on fitness, not totally familiar with the team shape or his team mates.

The way Sagna and Clichy pass and move in the final third is beyond a joke. they just don't have a clue. With the way we play, the width comes from the fullbacks, our opponents know we have zero threat from that area and that enables them to stay as narrow as is possible. Attacking fullbacks, proper, dangerous attacking fullbacks, would make us a different animal going forward.

And I hope you're right on Walker, but I have a nasty feeling he is going to turn out to be very, very good.

I was impressed with Walker too, way before today. Scored some good goals and generally looked lively. Stevo said he was shit defensively though
