of course not, because we sold van persie, fabregas, flamini, gilberto, etc. arshavin single-handedly kept us in the top four. arteta's been instrumental. santos has kept our caterers busy.

but i agree with you that if we can buy a true star player at age 20, we should. we have to spend serious money on future henrys, bergkamps and vieiras though. there's no point dicking around the bargain bin for miyaichis, wellingtons and denilsons.

Considering Henry and Bergkamp and extrapolating to today's prices, we should be looking for players who are:

Young(ish) - around mid-20s and down to 20, but still with the second and third acts left in their career
Obviously possessing world class gifts
Positive mentality and charisma
Struggling at their current club for some reason, or unsettled

and we should be looking at around the £20m mark and up in terms of price.

I'd say that's about right actually - we need two forwards on a budget of around £50m for both.

yep, a pair of £25m signings sounds about right. i mean, the whole point of the fabregas and van persie transfer fees is to hopefully replace like for like. that's not going to happen if you buy 4 £10m players instead. the market is more efficient than it was in 1995 or even 2005 - struggling world class talents in the 20-25 age bracket are not going to be bargains anymore.

Henry £11m in 1999, Bergkamp £7.5m in 1995.

Don't think anyone would hazard a guess of less than £20m for such fees today.

This is what is surprising, dear Burnsy.
We have paid top dollar (British record fees) to bring in top quality players.
Now we act like we know some secret about finding good players, at a time when you and I can scout players on 10 dedicated sports channels and YouTube from our parents' basements.

I would take Lampard in a heartbeat. The bloke has years of quality football left in him and is, for my money, still one of the best centre mids around. He'd be an absolute steal.

Willian looked pretty good against Chelsea this year, but otherwise never been that impressed with him in the CL, and from what I know he hasn't been particularly prolific for Shaktar over the years either in Ukraine.

Don't get the hype, really.

Attacking talents worth looking at if we have genuine ambition are jovetic, konoplyanka, isco, Thiago alcantara,el shawaary and ananidze
