It really isn't that simple and in some cases there are mitigating circumstances, Irbahimovich was on a long contract at Barcelona but they CHOSE to sell him because he couldn't get along with Messi, Man Utd CHOSE to sell Ronaldo because he wanted to go, Van Persie refused to sign a new contract so we sold him.
I'm not trolling, you can't look at things and say well since they were under contract we could have kept them.

I'm still under the impression that we had a £130k/w basic contract on the table, informally, at the time the infamous statement was released. Was that not vaguely confirmed, or am I making that up?
As we all know, that would have been a relatively derisory offer for a player at Van Persie's level in the current market.
