I don't think anyone has really argued that we should not have a top quality striker as back-up to van Persie.
Obviously it would be brilliant to have a Di Natale on the bench.
The problem is in reality that scenario doesn't work as most top strikers need games and goals to stay in form.
Torres is desperately out of form, I'm not sure how I see him regaining it sitting on the bench here watching Robin.
It takes a special mentality and character to play that back-up role.
Seeing the problem with that scenario has nothing to do with having small time notions.
Eduardo, Bendtner, Chamakh 🙂 - none of them could cope with that role, they all wanted or want games.
Even Robin himself needed continuous playing time to turn into the monster striker that he is now.
I remember last year Nela we had a discussion in which you favoured playing Bendtner over Robin because you felt Robin was too creative and Bendtner more direct - that was at a time when he was in and out with injuries.
Now we see that all he needed was games.
To me it's far too simplistic to think we're going to replace Robin's goal scoring rate with a player who will only play part time.
Either we strike it lucky and get ourselves a super sub in the Solksaar mould or we end up with yet another striker whose confidence collapses due to limited playing time.
We need a player who can convert a high percentage of chances but who is not strictly limited to playing CF.
Needs to be able to play alongside Robin in some capacity as well as replace him if he's out.
