Also not directed at this post specifically but more a general observation but I find this talk of destroyed artefacts incredibly distasteful. We in the West don't mind "precision strikes" with hundreds of tomahawks killing people (combatant or not) and destroying mosques and the homes of Lord knows how many but when these savages destroy the insignia of their own country's past our civilised and cultured conscience raises its head condemning and lambasting Daesh or whoever for ruining "invaluable history".

From orbit. I know he's running anti-union legislation and trying to conditionalise welfare access, so pretty much Australia in the 1980s.

Haven't been following what's been going on in France at all really, get some background mutterings from the brother in law who appears to believe Macron's doing what needs to be done to drag the French work system into the 21st century.

I know a fair few younger French people living here who support him, perhaps dreaming of returning to France to jobs he's helped create

His meetings with Trump over the last few days were at hide behind the sofa levels of cringe.

He did call Trump out on his regressive thinking on environmental policies though, somebody needs to keep doing that.

If the situation is anything like other countries, his reforms will spur growth. Trouble is in a decade or two the adrenalin will be spent, the right to strike will be gone, and social payments will be targeted below the poverty line. The concessional attitude of Blairs and Macrons to rent-seeking corporations is unbalanced over time.

I guess for all the aforementioned reasons (demise of the nation state etc) it will be different for France than other countries.

Britain and France have denounced as a "stunt" and "masquerade" a move by Russia and Syria to produce Syrian witnesses to support claims that there was no chemical attack in the city of Douma earlier this month.

Russian and Syrian officials on April 26 presented several unharmed people from Douma, near Damascus, at the headquarters of the Organization for the Prohibition for Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague.

Russia also held a press conference later in the day to present "evidence" that allegations of the chemical attack were "completely null and void," according to Russia's representative to the OPCW, Aleksandr Shulgin.

The U.K. representative to the OPCW, Peter Wilson, said Britain and its allies would not attend the briefing, saying in a statement that "the OPCW is not a theater."

"Russia’s decision to misuse it is yet another Russian attempt to undermine the OPCW’s work, and in particular the work of its Fact Finding Mission investigating chemical weapons use in Syria," he added.

Plenty of American and British news outlets reporting it as a "clash" between Israelis and Palestinians. There's no clash. A clash is a violent confrontation between two aggressors. There are zero injured Israelis. Aound 2500 Palestinians have been injured in addition to the 52 that have now been confirmed dead and the hundred who are in critical condition. A thousand people have been shot. Disabled people, the elderly and paramedics have been killed. Half a dozen children were murdered by sniper fire. It's not a clash. It's an extermination.

It was no different when they justified Operation Protective Edge in terms of home-made Hamas rockets that hadn't killed anyone. "Mowing the grass" as they call it. The slaughters will continue until Gaza is totally destroyed, or the strategic situation in the whole region is transformed.
