It's a clear red for me. The only reason people are surprised is because players get away with these kind of fouls all the time in England. A tackle from behind with no intent other than to take out another player should always be a red.
Does this mean Ivanovich should've been sent off for the trip from behind on Iwobi in the Chelsea game?
If you are going to send players off for this type of fouls, there would be watching a 5aside game regularly. You always end up with these contentious issues when you put people who have never played the game before in charge. This is why F1 has ex drivers arbitrating on racing incidents because it's helped clean up governance and removed the bad stewarding that ruined the sport. I think football could learn lessons here because Riley and his minions cannot be allowed to continue to ruin the game with their incompetent appointments.
In actual fact the only way it looked anywhere near borderline red was because the Swansea player had progressed slightly beyond the point Xhaka could've confortably made a tackle without stretching. He almost certain made contact with his shin pads and could not have caused the distress the Swansea player made people believe he was under.
There was clearly some bad officiating on show in this game and it was topped off with the red card. No other top ref would've given this red card apart from John Moss because his incompetency is widely known.
