Coquelin is currently playing at a higher level than Xhaka, and in fact he has been very good this season.

I would say he was MOTM for me last night. His energy level was immense and pretty much won everything he went for.

yeah i'm not comfortable with xhaka being the most defensive in a partnership. he should be working to partner with coq.

Xhaka can be the base of the midfield but he's gonna need a more mobile player next to him who can press higher up the field. I think it makes him fundamentally ill-suited to play with Santi but any combination with him and Coquelin, Ramsey or Elneny should be fine in theory.

I love Santi, but a Xhaka-Coquelin midfield pivot is mouthwatering to say the least. Modern day Vieira-Petit.

Coquellin is DEF our most underrated player, the amount of criticism he gets is silly.

It's ridiculous. Ramsey can't even come remotely close to doing what coq does, yet he's always touted as some how being our "real" midfield option, if not for circumstance. Coq speeds our game up. Slowing down really is our Achilles heel. He helps address that. Indispensable, for me. I finally see what Wenger sees.

This ferocious professionalism after they mature is a good reason to give young players who are unreasonably arrogant about their trajectory and their inclusion in the first team—as Coq briefly was—a bit of extra time. The hunger does matter.

That's a great point, often overlooked.
Coquelin is one who went close to the abyss and that's what made him what he is.
He clearly has limitations but does the other things at such a high level that Wenger decided he could not be overlooked.

There's too much focus on his ability on the ball and not enough focus on how many attacks he starts by simply winning it back high up the pitch. Look no further than our opener against West Ham. That wasn't the only example of that on Saturday either.

He started off the West Ham game still having some of the missing focus but grew as the game wore on. It's not easy staying focused when your team are ahead and chomping at the bit but he's got that sorted.
