definitely has downsides. there were moments when the space in front of kos and mus was cavernous. i would like to think that if we play a team that has strong AMs that coq will drop back to occupy the space in front of the back 4

For whatever reason, Schneiderlin at Man U has flopped. Hard. However, his years at Southampton were very, very good; he is a really good central midfielder IMO, and he is more rounded as a player than Coquelin is. I'm very happy with our midfield options as they are though, and at this point I'd argue that we are better served with what Coquelin has to offer.

Two managers have ignored him completely. He doesn't excel at anything. He may be slightly better on the ball than Coquelin but that's it. Coquelin plays with much more intensity and if the gap then was minimal, I think Coquelin has progressed immensely defensively for Schneiderlin's ability on the ball to matter at all.

just another player who looked great at a team that scouts better than anyone else in country. the only player who's come out of Southampton and turned himself into something is Bale.

actually, i'm not critical of Southampton. i laugh at the short-cut mentality of other clubs around England who see a player performing well at Southampton and overpay for these players in the belief that they will be stars at their own clubs. credit to Southampton for continuing to generate the players it needs, and then selling them at inflated values to clubs that don't know how to exploit them

Not serious, just highlighting how Schneiderlin isn't worth what was paid for him.

Schneiderlin had plenty of Premier League experience and counts as homegrown. I don't think United bought him to be a long-term starter, but £20 milion is on the cheap side for someone like him right now relative to the state of the market.

Generally I think English clubs overpay for central midfielders though. There's plenty of talent around if you care to look. Delph is getting laughed at since his City move for instance, but he's an excellent footballer at heart. Gueye excelled last season in one of the worst sides I've ever seen in Premier League and deserved a better club than Everton. Cabaye was great for Palace last year and would have been a good short-term solution for pretty much every top club in the country. Leicester brought in Kante from France last summer for like two million quid.

Apart from maybe passing, Coquelin is superior in every aspect.

Think Coquelin's just about rated correctly on here. Decent/good squad player who fulfills a function in the team, but who ideally wouldn't be a starter on a side with title aspirations.

I like him as a character as well, and a clear upgrade on what may be deemed roughly as the "Flamini role"

coq's form is an important element here - when he's playing like 2 years ago (and perhaps in recent games), he's just a must have, particularly when coupled with a player like Cazorla. In a way, when he's on form it enables wengs to play Cazorla.

And yeah, I agree he's underrated. Almost as underrated as his midfield partner.

Hmm may be too early to talk about Coquelin's good form. He played well against Hull, and was okay against tough opposition against PSG, but he was poor against Southampton last week and also against Liverpool in the season opener for my money as well.

Wenger does seem determined to play Coquelin-Cazorla at the moment, so that works in his favour if they are able to gain an increased understanding the more they play

That's alright though, because Wenger over rates Cazorla as a CM to more than compensate.

The current state of perceptions on Coq right seems to have his status back up to a solid average, following a bit of a trough last season.

I don't think either his game or his performances have changed all that much during that time, but the way we feel about Elneny, Cazorla and Ramsey has moved around a fair bit. Ramsey's return from injury is going to take the competition for midfield places up to a feverish pitch that might even put Ozil's selection at risk.

by late season, there will be questions around Ozil versus Iwobi at 10 if the young man can stay focused. it will not be a discussion on quality. rather it will be a discussion about dimensions. Iwobi gives you a ten who can create, but also get into scoring positions. he's much more of a double threat (score and assist) than Ozil, which could make offense more dynamic. i would definitely use him as the Ozil alternate when we need to rest the German as the season progresses.
of course, Iwobi will have to stay focused and keep growing.
