Wenger sees no need whatsoever for a DM or even a DLP in this new system.

Have you noticed how our two CMs almost never drop deep to collect the ball now? We're expected to shift the ball quickly from our centre backs to either our wing backs or to e.g. Sanchez dropping deep to "play make".

We basically now need two elite box-to-box CMs.

They used to, but it wasn't too difficult to see that it worked to our opponents advantage. Our midfielders and players in general lack the technical ability to hold the ball and control the game against most teams (especially in the absence of a player of Cazorla's talent and caliber). Back then you could almost feel the panic as soon as the opposing team initiated a high press, and with players like Ramsey, Xhaka and sometimes bloody Oxlade Chamberlain tasked to transition the ball forward from defence, the forced error wasn't long in coming.

I think our lack of midfield build up play now is an admission and recognition of that limitation. This is the sad work around.

Since we signed Özil he has created more chances than anyone else in Premier League and he has assisted more goals than anyone else in Premier League. And that's despite playing with some absolute trash surrounding him.

It does not hurt to have Aguero et al in front of you, but he brings an all around control of the game that few number 10s have. He's just much more central to the game than Mesut has been for about 2 seasons now. Mesut was once great, don't get me wrong, but it feels like 18 months at least since I've seen anything approaching the man he can be, and he hasn't been injured/recovering that whole time. I expect more

All true. I'm glad Wenger at least recognises our midfielders aren't capable of that game anymore.

Jack is the only one other than Cazorla who can actually pull it off (as he did for the entire 10/11 season), but he's an ankle break waiting to happen there.

I think you need a 3 man MF to do that anyway in the modern game. The 3 at the back and 2 in MF structure basically means that the WBs and the inside forwards will do most of the work on the ball and the 2 midfielders primarily need to either be DLPs or purely defensive MFs. That's why I have been wishlisting Pulisic for a while now - excellent at ball retention, good dribbler, 2 footed - everything I think we need in that inside forward position.

Tend to agree with this. Should've forced an Ozil-Lemar trade, and limited downside to losing Sanchez on a free. Hindsight. Hopefully, we can still come to some kind of agreement

That option never came up as Monaco accepted our bid but Lemar turned it down.

Also, Ozil wouldn't accept any inferior transfer we foist on him as, by the end of August, he only has to wait 4 months to be free to talk to anyone which is what he is doing now, if his agents/advisors are worth their salt.
I think Wenger realises this and is easing him out of the side using the "fake" injury excuses.

We only have ourselves to blame as we should've forced him to sign a long-term contract well before the final year.

I think it turns out differently with Lemar if we do that deal in May, not during an international game on deadline day. And for half the price. And then we have one in the hand as we think about what to do with Ozil and Sanchez

True, but we couldn't sell either to the highest bidder as they each had to agree and the only half-decent sale we were guaranteed was for Sanchez but that was limited to the only team he would agree to go to (man city).
As i mentioned, the few months left to January took away the threat of permanent benching as doing that would remove all hope of getting anything at all.

The approach to the summer just reminded how ultra conservative we have been from Peter Hill-Wood's time to the present. United would've splashed the cash on Lemar, risked having a bloated squad and then dealt with the Sanchez/Ozil issues. In fact United would have tried to sign Lemar as a show of intent to entice the other two to stay.
We, on the other hand, just keep doing the least. Rex Tillerson has a description for our transfer team.

Pretty good article on Ozil. Basically he hasn't improved us, we haven't improved him after 4 years either.

Overall, that seems just like a lot of rambling without any proper point besides 'Özil has not improved'.

While there are quite a few flaws to Özil's game, most of the criticism he gets from the pundits and media are just lazy stereotypes.

It's true that Özil doesn't have the right mentality to push himself all the way to be the best he could be. If he did, he'd probably still be at Real.
