I actually wouldn't be that surprised if Ozil signed in the end. Always goes on about loving London, recently bought a house here (though that's not a bad investment regardless) is getting Married etc. If he continues to play like he has been I can imagine the club going the further mile to get it done.

Worth keeping in mind he has a crazy social media following and is big in China so there's a commercial benefit.

I will believe it when I see it. Right now this is all just unsubstantiated rumours when in fact he could have already agreed in principle to sign elsewhere given how quietly his team works.

That rumour came from people seeing the club twitter account putting up a load of Ozil tweets in a row and assuming it meant something.

There’s been smoke before that, but Twitter rumours take on a life of their own on almost next to nothing. Wenger’s tone doesn’t suggest to me that anything is close.

I’ve often posed the question on here asking why Mesut can’t play in a midfield 3 and I still don’t see why not. I actually think it really siuits him. We just need a better defensive player in the middle. Nzonzi with a combo of Jack, Mesut and Ramsey would really work in my opinion.

Yeah, he's played quite deep in recent games and does a far better job than Xhaka at getting the ball forward.

Jack is a real option centrally. For me his best position is still deeper where he can burst past players and open up spaces.

I think Jack's limited defensive capability is why Wenger is reluctant to play him in combination with Ozil.
Seeing how Coquelin allowed us to play Cazorla deep, i'm all for trying Nzonzi who, unlike everyone else, is available.

Hopefully Jack stays fit and can keep improving. He's been out for long time so we are going to have a while before he's back to 100%

Yeah, Jack right now is back at where he was last season when he fractured another bone. The upside is that he'll only get stronger if he doesn't get injured (touch wood). He could end up being a real difference maker for us during the second half of the season. No one in the league is going to sign a player with even half of his ability in the January window.

Of course you can, but whether it's great from a tactical point of view is another matter. It's akin to playing say, Messi in a midfield 3. The only way you could make it work IMO is by having 2 dedicated holding midfielders (both strong defensively) and at least one hardworking midfielder outwide who could tuck in when needed.

Players like Ozil, Mata etc are best kept away from any CM duties, they should be considered as part of the forward line IMO.

That may be the case but, rather than Mata, couldn't we use Ozil like Real Madrid use Modric who is able to fully operate in CM because of the defensive stability offered by Casemiro and Kroos?

I think Modric is even better defensively than Kroos.He's a proper CM, used to play in a 2 with Tom Huddelstone for Spurs.

I'd rather Ramsey as the most attacking player in a midfield 3 with Ozil pushed further forward.

I cannot disagree as i hardly ever watch spuds or RM as i dislike them both but i enjoyed the nasty meg Alba treated him to yesterday

Why is it a tactical issue when in essence the only difference is he’s just an extra man in there as opposed to playing him further up as a ten?

Ozil in a three is nowhere near as bad as Santi in a two and that worked for us for long periods. City play KDB and Silva in there and don’t have any issues either.
