Only one game so we can't draw any conclusions.
Based on the past year, what justifiably annoys people is not his ability but his application.
I want to see him doing more of what he does well rather than more tackling back that many of his critics ask for.
I think that's just dumb for a player like him and we don't have to look very far to see the perils of this (Wilshere's injuries).
I think the "he is a striker" experiment has been proven to be a failure and i want him on playmaking duties rather than deferring to Xhaka.

there has been quite a spike of negativity around him lately. the united rumours and fake injury rumours seemed to get people stoked up, the looming contract situation, and his general ozil-ness has resulted in him getting onto supporters shit-lists it seems. i still enjoy watching him play warts and all.

When he’s up for it, he’s unstoppable. I just wish we saw that 75% of the time. Not once in a blue moon. Maybe Wenger can help by trying to keep yesterday’s team as much as possible, but Ozil needs to graft as well.

I don't think he needs to graft at all. A lot of our current problems stem from not having him in the final third. Like when Wenger does that thing and takes off a striker as soon as he puts on a playmaker. We just end up with Özil in central midfield and get to see him track fullbacks, and then we concede anyway because we can't keep the opponents out of our half.

Agree completely. It’s not like he put in a defensive shift against Everton. He just had a lot of movement around him.

Ozil has great numbers since he has joined Arsenal. Too much at times is made of his defensive work rate. For me, the biggest issue is his goal scoring. He looked like he had developed an appetite for it but didn't really materialize into much. He is a forward and not a midfielder, gets into great positions and if he can just improve on the number of goals he scores there will not be many complaints about his off the ball defensive effort.

I think people too often just jump to the conclusion that work rate is only defensive work rate. Can refer to offensive work rate as welll. He worked hard on offense yesterday, very similar to how he often did in his first half season here, and hasn’t on many occasions thereafter. Workrate isn’t just about chopping people down

True. I don't think it's so much a matter of application personally, I think what he needs to replicate is playing higher up the pitch in and around the area where he can make a difference and make more forward runs rather than dropping off. Take more responsibility.

He surprising started the season poorly on that front, wasn't at his technical best. His touch wasn't as good as it can be and he was also missing passes with their weight which he normally makes but over his time here his off the ball movement when we have the ball hasn't ever been in question in my opinion. Without him in the side we look fairly clueless creatively because no one in the team finds space the way he can. He drops off also when the midfield is being unable to establish any control of possession and tempo which just goes back to the most obvious point of quality around him. Hopefully with Lacazette making more runs in behind and Ramsey too running in from deep will make a big difference in the final third.

Sticking to position is a really tough discipline, especially when you've got someone like Wenger who essentially lets you decide how to play the role, but it's essential to stick to it even when you're starved of the ball otherwise you just exasperate the issue.

Yes, when they won't commit to the club it's hard to support them. Even though I'm sure both are doing their best on the pitch.

The worst part of it all is that they remain undroppable for Wenger. He should be threatening Ozil with being dropped because it would definitely hurt his position at international level.

I'd be glad if both left in January. We need to remove all significant uncertainty around the club so we can at the very least work with a stable base.

It's odd given his past stance on getting rid of players who wanted to leave. I never appreciated or agreed with the stance it at the time but it was probably the right stance.

He probably feels that he needs to justify not selling them in the summer by playing them. I think the fact that he left the possbility of them leaving in Jan open is quite telling, he probably knows it was an error.

Yep and that is a big factor in ensuring they can continue to give whatever they want on the pitch. We are so dumb in such situations and really should have taken a leaf out of Liverpool's attitude towards Suarez 3 years ago to have a better chance for forcing a new contract on them.

Alexis quality still does show through his effort and endeavour, but even then I don't feel anything for him nowadays given that his heart is set on one of our major rivals. I have nothing but dislike on players who join our rivals.

I don't think you need a stance thats set in stone. It should be a player by player basis. If one of them hits a great run of form then great, use it. However there is no real advantage to sticking by them when they aren't committed. If they lack motivation provide some by making them earn their starts.

Well Özil did have a very good game vs Everton so it was not unreasonable to start him at Etihad and Sanchez is our best player. Wenger would be shooting himself in the foot if he dropped them. He made the decision to keep them and now he has to commit to that decision.

Ozil should always be dropped away against the big sides IMO. Everton was an easy game, of course you expect Ozil to perform in those circumstances. He almost never does when the games tougher though, when the oppositions quality means we need big moments from our big players.

Sanchez is our best player and I agree it made sense to start him yesterday and I don't think he was half as bad as Ozil. TBH I'd keep playing Alexis. I'd drop Ozil for Spurs though.
