Achilles tendons are tricky. There is a good chance Speedy is right; Cazorla needs a surgery to really put the problems behind him, but he doesn't want to do it because of the long recovery time. Rest and rehab can alleviate the pain, but won't fix the problem. So, after summer hols his tendon could very well have been good enough to get through the beginning of the season, but with the added load of actual football the pain is too much. If that's the case, then this rest period won't solve anything more than for a few months either.

Didn't Kos have an issue with his Achilles that took a while last year or two years ago?

Probably, it's not that he need surgury it's that he needs a certain level of strengthening. For example his tendon might need a 5/10 load to heal. It's very hard to get that 5/10 load while he's playing, he's probably stressing it 9/10 during games so rehab 5/10 strengthening on top of football is loading the problem way more than ideal.

The longer he has had the pain the more relative rest (rehab) hes going to need. As he might have to start with a 2/10 load and build from their until his knee can tolerate a 10/10 load again.

Impossible to know how bad it is. It could be any where from 1-3 months depending on how bad it is starting off.

Could really be a bit of a disaster. Well if we can cope maybe a blessing in disguise. This is the second season now where he's had a long lay off, might be time to come up with a new plan A.

yeah i think we needed to be snapped out of our reliance on cazorla at some point. witht he options we have, there's a decent chance a new solution can emerge

heard lucas will be available for EFL as well. that's good news. that's a guy that we desperately need to get going asap

We should be considering that anyway - he's not getting younger, and this last episode just demonstrates how crucial he is for us. But I can't see a January fix for that. And I certainly don't see how we can cope with what we have here. We need to buy a top CM IMO. No other way.

If you can't find a good pairing from Ramsey, Coquelin, Xhaka, Elneny and Wilshere then it says more about the manager than the players.

That's exactly how I feel too. We have a very good set of central midfielders, even to the extent that Wenger greenlit shipping Wilshere to Bournemouth for the season. I can't think of any PL club, at least, which has a better set of central midfielders! It is totally down to the manager to make it work.

Wilshere aside (and until he actually plays his case will be suspended) - which one of these guys is a super player? Ramsey had a great spell a few years ago; we have reasons to believe Xhaka could be decent; Neny is ok at best, and Coq's a destroyer.

Santi is a super player. On a different league to the above. Perhaps Jack can become something similar (definitely has the raw talent; doubt he has the brain - but perhaps). But if we want to see our team produce the kind of stuff that had us jumping earlier, we need another Santi. Whatever Wenger can or cannot do.

Xhaka is a £35m player and considered one of the best midfielders in Germany last season, he should be more than decent. Ramsey had a great season a couple of years ago and then get shifted to the right. He was in the team of the tournament in the Euros playing in the middle for Wales. Destroyer or not, Coquelin has been very dependable. Chelsea have excelled with Kante and Matic in midfield, which one of them do you reckon plays the Santi role?

Fact is aside from Santi we have 5 good to potentially very good centre mids. Qs is right, we need to break our dependence on Santi to make us tic and find a style and way to make it work without him outwise we're wasting one of our biggest strengths.
