While I'm happy that we're one step closer to a general election, a part of me is also concerned that challenging the 'orthodoxy' of conventional institutions/the blob/the swamp (whatever you call it) is a very real task that it seems no one individual is equipped to take on. Truss wanted to take the country in a very different way to what I want but however I'm under no illusions that anyone else talking of reform without getting it signed off by the powers that be will meet with a similar fate. She just has a particularly terrible personality on top of it.

Worth having a squizz at the Labour Files. One needs to be a bit cautious as it's certainly an emotive Al-Jazeera hatchet job, but there's a lot of evidence in there as to why the Labour Party has been so ineffective.

In the middle of a cost of living crisis and a structural transformation provoked by Brexit and hurting a lot of people, a touch of pedestrian, old school social democracy like the 2019 Labour manifesto would probably please the banks as much as anyone.

Trouble is Starmer's now created a version of Labour incapable of ambition or mobilising support.

So Hunt has basically undone everything Truss outlined, both in the mini budget and in her leadership campaign. As bad as the last couple of weeks have been, this is somehow worse for her. This sums it up pretty well:

A former cabinet minister has told me Hunt's economic statement just now confirmed that Truss "is a goner, it put it beyond any doubt".

They continued: "What is the point of Liz Truss? That is the question... there is literally no point."

In all seriousness, there really is a lack of experience at the top of the Government right now. Most government departments were gutted out during austerity, most senior ministers were gutted out as part of the Brexit alignment and anyone that was left was kicked out in the past couple of months. You're left with a bunch of people who are neither serious nor credible so any idea they put forward has a risk premium attached anyway in a very literal sense. If I were a Tory MP, I would actually look forward to being in Opposition and reset the house of cards

Cameron should have never stepped down and May should have never tried to 'unify' the party by involving a bunch of the lunatics - but I guess she needed them after the disastrous 2017 election. But yeah, they're toast.

According to the latest seat projections, the Tories wouldn't even be the official opposition, they'd be pushed into third by the SNP.

I highly doubt we'll see anything like this, but it's still quite something to see it being forecasted just a couple of years after Johnson won a huge majority.

As you type that, Nicola Sturgeon is laying out the economic argument for Scottish Independence. I voted no last time, I'm still no but there to be won over more than I was before. But I look at Sturgeon's plans and see the same mistakes as Brexit awaiting her.

Whats the sort of timeline for getting back into the EU if Scotland voted for independence?

Now Braverman is gone seemingly due to sharing information from a private mobile. Potentially linked with another reason too. You couldn’t write this shit.

No timeline for rejoining EU Qs. No details on a whole host of issues with the apparent reason being current instability making it difficult to plan effectively. It’s not been well received.

Tears in my eyes at how they’re self destructing at the moment. Some talk that Truss could be gone by the morning given the sheer number of no confidence letters going in. Tory MPs openly calling the Government a joke.

No idea where they go from there. Can’t see them holding a general election early as they’d be wiping themselves out even if the idea of yet another unelected PM is ludicrous. My guess is if they can they’ll try and form some of centrist cabinet and hope they can build back enough credibility to avoid that scenario.
