Not discounting Conte's influence but I wouldn't describe any of these Italian players as average.
They're far from average, but you have to admire Conte all the same. Verratti and Marchisio got injured months ago and missed the Euros completely. That was his whole central midfield right there, and possibly the best two midfielders in the tournament too. Then Motta broke down once they arrived in France.
I think I called him a more likable version of Mourinho a while back. It's a silly reference to be honest because he's a far better manager than Mourinho, but there are some key similarities. Every single player out there will go to war for him. Just look at the way Giaccherini and Parolo worked their asses off today.
