The actual content of his speeches was often contradictory and factually incorrect but he knew how to give a good soundbite out.
I wouldn't call him a brilliant communicator on that basis. A brilliant communicator is able to take complex issues and get people invested in them. Not generate tabloid headlines and appeal to the lowest common denominator. On that front Sanders was much better than both Clinton and Trump.
