They have a few quality players who certainly are capable of gelling and then start to produce results for them.

I think it's too early for anything, but for United wise I think Mourinho will do some drastic things to end in a disaster.

As far as title race is concern it will certainly be more exciting than previous seasons. In fact, looking at all the europe top leagues it's weird every league is so close.

I don't think they will win either, and I too think it is more likely that the Moron effect will get them deeper in the hole. However, they do have a few quality players who undoubtedly have the quality to get them, and keep them, close to the top.

I actually agree on the whole but I do think a run can at the very least paper over the cracks for a while. See his last title winning season with Chelsea. I think the cracks in the foundation were already visible that season but the momentum was enough to disguise it till the next season.

That being said, I don't look at their next 8 games a see a load of easy games. Sweansea, Everton, West Brom and Palace away are all tricky fixtures and they have us, Tottenham and West Ham at home too. They'll do well to get a good run out of that.

I think their "quality" players are overrated. Plus there are plenty of sides above them already with quality players too.

Don't know. Zlatan was old already last season but had a monster season. Looks like age, finally, has caught up with him now though in the last month or so, but then again I wouldn't be all that surprised if he suddenly went up a level or two. De Gea has the potential to save them crucial points, but he isn't playing at that level. Pogba is a massive talent, but he has been terribly underwhelming. Mkhitaryan had a great season last season, but can't even get into their team now. Smalling played very well for most of last season. Martial still looks like a top talent to me. Rashford is a very exciting young player. All in all, I'd say they have a number of players who CAN step up and help them but, as many of you say, it doesn't look likely. Moron isn't a guy who is known for stopping bad momentum or lifting players with poor confidence either! To me, it looks more likely that they will continue to drop off more and more, but I wouldn't at this point completely rule out that they can get back in it.

Bit random but slightly related to this thread I guess, but I saw the last 45 mins of the 2009/2010 season review on Sky. Boy oh boy, we were only like 3 points behind Chelsea like in mid-March.

What fucked us was Kevin Phillip's equaliser against us in the last min (oh Almunia, what the hell were you doing!. We then lost crucial games to Spurs (Danny Rose's debut goal) and the final nail in the coffin was losing to Wigan away after being 2-0 up!

Fabregas was amazing for us that season and acted like a proper leader (see Stoke away). What a bottle job, don't know if that is worse or 2011, 2014 or 2016??

2008 was the time I felt most strongly that we could win the title, so that was the worst one for me.

Honestly, everything between 2008/2009 until the end of 2012/2013 has kind of just gelled into one long uninspiring season for me. Can hardly remember much from that period. The Arshavin 4-4, the Chelsea 5-3, van Judas's crazy scoring run, and the usual CL "heroic effort but valiant losses" to to Barca, Bayern and Milan.

Don't think I remember any real runs at the title either. Felt like 2007/2008 and last season were times we got close and felt we really could and should have won. All those other seasons just never really felt like we were in it at all, and even less so after Christmas when the real race starts.

Yeah that's pretty much my recollection of it as well. After the 2008 squad, the rest are just forgettable. I sort of remember we have torrid runs of draws and losses to pretty much everyone after March in one of the season where everyone just gave up. Nasri in particular is horrible.

Now that you mention Nasri, because of him I remembered two more games, the one he scored twice against United and that game where he went on a crazy run against Porto. Maybe 3 if I didn't imagine this one time where he scored a crazy swivel shot from almost behind the goal, think it may have been against Fulham.

He had one or two moments but always seemed, at least to me, to shy away from taking responsibility on the pitch. Almost always took the easy way out and passed it back to the fullback or the midfielder despite all his talent.

Even in 2007, when you look at the respective squads we had no right to even compete with that United side. VDS, Rio, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez all in their prime. It's no surprise we 'threw it away' when you take a really close look at the players we were relying on to pull us through, particularly after the injuries. United got 87 points, it was always asking a lot of that squad to beat that.
