He's an attacking midfielder, which does make me wonder why we signed Vieira for so much money. Paqueta can be used on the flank too though, and played there a lot for Milan when he first arrived to Europe.

I'd prefer paqueta over tielemans, for the right price. if we're indeed planning on playing with two advanced 8s, they need to have sufficient workrate to help with pressing, which paqueta has over tielemans. paqueta reminds me of a diet kaka, with a bigger battery

And just like Kaka he's much closer to a forward than a CM. Just because an attacking player has good defensive work rate like Alexis did doesn't mean they can play midfield.

I like Paqueta a lot but he's not playing in a position we need. What's with the constant signing players out of position anyway, wanted to do it with Martinez, will do it with Vieira and now Paqueta too

Doesn't make much sense then to sign him, was hoping he was more a CM but we are well stocked with Ode/Vieira in AM. Then you have ESR who can cover that position as well.

I think he can play as a CM for us.. His game seems to be well rounded and looks like he is a fighter. We have more 'defensive' midfield players for the 8 with Zinchenko and Xhaka. Its about having different options also.

His passing is erroneous and he naturally takes loads of risks you can't get away with in midfield, he presses well but pressing like a forward and like a CM where you need to have a lot more spatial awareness are very different. He'd be both wasted and a risk playing deeper.

what's surprising to me is how high risk arteta is setting up the midfield. partey as a single pivot is already a risk as he can be loose goosey with his passing at times. on top of that he wants two advanced midfielders ahead of partey that are creative and energetic but lack athelticism/explosiveness/tackling ability. not sure trying to mimic cities setup is wise when you don't have elite pieces like KDB and bernado

So at the same mid table sides where he has performed as an AM also.. Jesus/Eddie play a similar role which actually think is a plus for a CM that can carry the ball. He has the skillset I would want in the 8 role, especially against weaker opposition where we struggle to unlock teams in the middle.. Whether it is him or someone else... Like I said I think we have our safer options now in CM, need something different.

Yeah the issue there is whether he has the stones to stick with it. Whenever he's tried it before he's reverted to a much more safe midfield very quickly.

People look at transfermarkt or whoscored and judge by those generic position stats.

Not sure why you're arguing when you haven't watched him play?

Milan looked way better with him further forward than at CM. Jesus/Eddie play absolutely nothing like Depay, Jesus drifts wide a bit but not deep and isn't nearly as influential and often on the ball as Depay used to be for Lyon.

Don't think we have our safer options at all, we've added no classic CMs while we might lose our best midfielder. And considering Vieira is apparently brought in to play in the midfield three we already have our "something different".

Because I can have an opinion about a player by looking at videos/touch clips if want to? also who says I haven't seen any games for him. Our CFs drop deep and are not target men is the point I was making, same as Depay.. yeah sure they are not exactly the same but it doesn't matter.

News to me that Vieira was brought in as a CM.

Vieira? Thought mainly AM, maybe winger. Seems pretty light weight for CM, but yeah could be wrong.. think its still probably too early to tell

I think it's pretty clear that we'll play 433 instead of 4231 so unless Vieira is playing on the wing he's a midfielder.

You are perhaps forgetting the FBs will likely invert to join Partey in a midfield3 across the DM line in a 5-5 split between Defence and Attack, whilst the hybrid #8s will look to occupy the half-spaces in front of the channels, much like our Inverted FBs will do in defence. The wide men in the front 3 will look to provide the width rather than overlapping FBs.
