I would absolutely love De Jong, and unlike other talented CMs I don’t think he’d take stifle Odegaard in any way. He’s a fantastic player who can certainly play deeper or as an 8 across from Ode in a 4-3-3. Those two together would be a joy to watch.

We should be all over him if he is available. He plays much deeper than Odegaard so that is not an issue at all.

But he's also a willing off ball runner, and has done a nice job adding new elements to his game (goal scoring / heading) at Barcelona. But for me he he'd be absolutely ace in Xhaka's position alongside or slightly ahead of Partey.

Partey - De Jong would be one of the most press resistant CM pairings around.

I could live with a second tier striker (David / DCL / etc.) if it meant we signed De Jong.

Yep, less vision and through passing ability, but stronger on the ball, and tactically more aware I’d say.

Totally not. He is a great short pass player. Basically a more progressive Busquets. Pass and move player. Facilitator.

De Jong started as a much deeper player (CM) when he was with Ajax. He played in a position/role similar to De Busquets, but offered far more in dribbling to break the press.

Since moving to Barcelona he's been playing noticeably further forward. For a while he was almost a second striker, or an 8 like Ramsey with late runs into the box. It was odd, and certainly not his natural game, but he was still playing well.

He had a few MOTM performances at the end of last season in that role. I'll try to dig one up.

Over this season though it's been stop start.

Who’d you compare him to then? Iniesta?

Actually reminds me of Rosicky in that he's more of an accelerator of play rather than someone who plays the final ball/scores. Fabregas was far more involved as the central fulcrum of the team from an offensive perspective (only challenged by RVP). De Jong isn't going to post seasons with 10+ goals and 10+ assists, don't think he's even broken 5+/5+.

As for comparisons to Barca players, he reminds me more of a younger Xavi when he was more mobile but certainly has shades of Iniesta.

There's really no player he's like but he'd be closer to a mix of Iniesta and Busquets than Fabregas. His passing is very good but he doesn't excel at finding runs, more at beating the press and accelerating play like Clrnc and T said. He played many games at centre back for Ajax because he was so secure on the ball that he could waltz through the middle of the pitch from very deep, he's deceptively fast too. Really can't compare him to anyone, Barcelona aren't fully utilising and realising his potential yet but he's still one of the best in the world in his position.

In the old days he would probably have been a libero, Beckenbauer style.

Superb player to couple with Partey at any rate. Just chuck him into Xhaka's position and he'll be perfect. He could drop down between the centrebacks in the defensive phase and contribute so much more in the attacking transitions.

Alot of strong reliable rumours about this now.

Just watched a few compilation videos of him. Looks technically average but strong defensively.
