De Jong started as a much deeper player (CM) when he was with Ajax. He played in a position/role similar to De Busquets, but offered far more in dribbling to break the press.
Since moving to Barcelona he's been playing noticeably further forward. For a while he was almost a second striker, or an 8 like Ramsey with late runs into the box. It was odd, and certainly not his natural game, but he was still playing well.
He had a few MOTM performances at the end of last season in that role. I'll try to dig one up.
Over this season though it's been stop start.
