i think, for his fitness, having partey play the deeper CM role might not be the worst thing, instead of asking him to play box to box for 90 mins. i think his shooting is a lot better than he showed last season, but hes pretty much an ideal fit for the deep CM in terms of his size, agility, and tackling/defending ability. before he came here, he showed a great willingness to play forward passes and distribute. i think he can do it again.

so then the question is, would aouar be the best fit we can get for that b2b CM spot? given our budget, maybe. im not sure hes got the defensive workrate to play there. i know odegaard does.

That's what I've been thinking recently as well, MD.

If Arteta really does want to move to a 4-3-3, and this summer's recruitment has been with that aim in mind, then is Aouar able to play that playmaking, tempo-setting role that Xavi performed? You'd have to think Ødegaard would be the accelerator, using his dribbling and incisive passing, and Partey would be the 6.

Obviously many more ways to play a 4-3-3 and to play in general than Barca's template, but I think that's what Arteta has hinted at and is in line with his ideas about football.

Aouar is a bit of an accelerator too though isn't he? I think Aouar is far too similar to Odegaard to make much sense.

I agree, Qs, I see him that way too, but since we were first linked, I've wondered if Arteta saw him developing into a different player, the kind I'm talking about. Maybe he even sees a bit of a similairty to his own development as a player?

I remember when we nearly signed him in January, Julien Luarens said that Arteta saw Auoar as his Kevin DeBruyne, but you could take that to mean different things. If we really plan to put both him and Ødegaard in a team together though, Aouar is the one more likely to play a bit deeper and more reserved, in my opinion.

Think the game that caught their eye was against City in the Champions League at the Etihad. Played a deeper role that night. That’s where he does his best work in my opinion.

Agree. And also when you say he's a turnover machine, I think that's because he lacks what's required to be really elite at 10. But bring him deeper in the field, with slighlty more time on the ball, less risk in what he's asked to do with the ball, and I think his dribbling and passing become way more effective. It's whether he has the brain to really thrive making 100 passes a game and with the play largely funneled through him.

Not convinced really. There’s also the risk he’d be overpowered. As you say, he’s not elite so he’ll have the odd wafty game,

Arteta probably wants a deeper creator/conductor hence trying for Jorginho last summer

Tbh, not sure. Only seen him play in the cl two years ago, but he looked like a terrific player. Really quick mind, if that makes sense. Looked like he always had a little bit of extra time on the ball.
