TBH if Onana was the original preferred choice based on capability rather than finances, then why not just keep Leno until we can sign Onana in Jan when he'll be fit and able to play, and then allow leno to depart?

Just because Onana is our preferred choice doesn't mean we are his. He'll likely have better options available to him. Without European football we are not that attractive any more.
i wouldn't say european football, more like champions league football specifically. no one is saying thank god you qualified for the conference league (or even europa league) because i can sign for you now.

Players want to play in Europe, they'd prefer CL but most of the time they'll take the Europa. Look at Partey for instance.
