Fully agree with where you are coming from, but with the state of the midfield, I honestly believe that the the area of need.

If we want to really start to dictate and dominate games, that is where Arteta needs to revamp

I'm not convinced the transfers of the likes of Willian, Partey, Ceballos and Gabriel is enough to convince PEA to sign an extension, let alone to win the UEL next season to regain UCL (which should be our objective as IMO top4 is probably out of reach if we persist with retaining our sustainable self funding policy).

I think it's a myth that top four is particularly difficult to achieve. United and Chelsea both finished in the top four this year. United started from a worse position than we did, and Chelsea had a team full of kids coached by a manager who was barely wet behind the ears. Leicester was parking in the top three forever and only lost out on Champions League in the final two rounds.

All you need is a good run where you pick up a lot of three-pointers. Leicester won 10 games in a row at one point. Those 30 points nearly accounted for half of their points total (62). Our longest winning streak was 2 games by contrast. I'd love to see us make a bigger effort to sort out our attack with that in mind, because the main reason we dropped so many points was that we couldn't score when it counted.

Yea but can't we at least countenance the idea that our attacking deficiencies are at least in some significant part down to compromises to cover for poor defensive options and a midfield that can't run?

I personally don't think signing prime Henry would sort out our attack as much as fixing midfield and defense.

MUs numbers were always better than ours in terms of xG & xGA, but it took Fernandes to translate that into performances.
Both of their starting XIs are ahead of ours to begin with in terms of quality and capability, whereas we were looking to protect our weaknesses with the 343.

Yes top4 should be achievable but currently we do not have the team to be able to do so, and given our finances I do not think we will be able to sign the top quality needed to close the gap in terms of the squad.
However IF we wanted to take advantage of the market we could do so, but I think we lack the ambition/determination, and have already missed some opportunities.

Yeah sure. I mean the idea has merit, both ends of the team affect eachother, but it's also reasonable to expect the defence to improve with a better attack by the same logic. A lot of our individual and collective errors were down to having no cutting edge whatsoever going forward, except the one we stowed away on the left wing and was busy marking fullbacks. Teams could advance on us because there was no threat. It's how we ended up conceding 30-ish shots in a bunch of games while only returning 2 or 3 in the other end.

Klaus, you have it all wrong here. We have a great attack. The problem Arsenal has is getting the ball to the attack. We have 2 failure points. Getting it out of defense, and advancing it out of midfield. Those are down to the technical qualities of the players in those positions and we need to fix that. Aubameyang is not getting a ouch shots. A guy like Salah alone is shooting about 50% more than he is, and the entire Pool attack is getting shots. It’s a similar story at City. That’s because they have a healthy flow of balls through midfield and defense to their finishers. We need to solve that constipation.

remove all the technically inept players in the back: Holding, Kolasinac, etc, replace with Saliba and later Upa/Konate
add mids who can distribute and drive: Pellegrini, Aouar, De Paul etc.
add mids who can receive on half turn and are progressive passers: Partey

On De Paul: was looking at Locatelli numbers. They’re incredible. De Paul’s are monstrous

If you watch Pépé last year, you’ll see that we completely misused him until the last 4 weeks of the season. In the last 4 weeks, he came off the line, started roaming, had many more touches of the ball.
If you stick Saka (7), Aubameyang, and Pépé up top - and then push balls up to them quickly and efficiently, we will score more goals than you can imagine. Our problem is the pipeline. You saw that our midfield was bottom 5 for assists and goals in the league this season. Our forwards are creating for themselves. You need to solve the right problems or you’ll spend money in the wrong places!!!

Another thing. Aubameyang, Pépé, Lacazette have all had significantly lower output since coming to Arsenal. And it’s not a function of sharing the goals. The team itself doesn’t score much. Look behind.
