The reason for the midfield as being ahead of the back4, is that the midfield impacts both our attack and defence, and having a midfield that is fit for purpose will automatically improve both those areas. Our transition will become quicker to get the ball forward without needing to go route 1. So far as the defence goes a midfield that provides better coverage will mean less need for Mustafi to over commit and break the lines.
Anzac, tactically, we understand what you are saying. The issue is we are carrying deadweight that needs to move immediately. If we came back with modified midfield but still had Ozil sucking money and disrespecting the coach, and Mustafi guiding opposing strikers to goal, we would still be in a state.
I’m sure there is a temptation to blow everything up right now but that might only bring to life this delusion that we are only Wolves-Everton level.
