so what's special about this season vs one of their previous "doldrums" years: 2005, 2008-09 and 2013-14? if they are reaping the rewards then something different must be happening.

Putting the pressure on is neither here nor there and if they don't win it by 2022, i'll be saying 30 years in the doldrums.
Yes winning the champions league is a major achievement but it's a cup competition and they weren't champions in their own country.

They also know that European clubs have the unfortunate situation of operating in repeated game negotiations. It was not in our best interests to take them to court for 6 months and fracture relations with a club we intended to do further business with both in transfers and collective bargaining.

It's not a defence it's literally the industry standard. Not even remotely enough to claim "our shit stink" especially when Liverpool themselves have taken that behaviour to the next level

My point is their "not holier than thou" attitude has elevated them to 1 point behind Abu Dhabi FC in the race for the Premiership.

The article says it's more like a first refusal to match any offer made.

For mind he seems to tick most of the boxes we want in midfield and seems to be one of the 'smart' transfer options we are calling for with restricted funds. Same applies re Fraser, although I don't know if either meet HG criteria for the PL.

Not really 'linked' as opposed to the article author wish listing local talent.
That said I'm not sure if we could sustain a challenge for either Maguire of Keane, and I'm not sure if Tarkowski provides what we saw from Holding on the ball, whilst de Ligt is fantasy football.
Lastly I'm sure that all 4 would have inflated prices for differing reasons.
