I like Banega and would sign him if he's cheap. If we can get 2.5 top seasons out of him it will be as good a return as most players ever give us after we spend years on developing them. I wouldn't worry about age too much in this specific instance. Guendouzi is 19. Torreira is 23. Maitland-Niles is 21. This strikes me as similar to signing Arteta, which was one of the best things Arsenal has done in the last 10 years.

That said I don't think Banega would come. Didn't he formally turn us down in the summer? What has changed since then?

I'm not in favour of Banega either, less from an age perspective and more from a priority perspective. I'd first want to get 2 CBs, an LB, 2 WFs and then think of the midfield.

Ndombele has been a hot prospect for a while now. Him breaking into a competitive national team on the back of his performances will end our interest. I can symphathise with our recruitment team a bit though. We have so many gaps in the team that it will be so difficult for them to prioritize going after the big bets like Ndombele at a time like this. Lots of Banegas and Guendouzis are more likely to be the order of the day

Yes. This. Think he’d be perfect in terms of a quality stop gap while we search for or develop the long term solution. Now, unless PHW has left us a fortune in his will, we are just going to have to be humble and scramble for the best deal we can get for right now to breathe new life into our injury ridden top four push

Not being in the CL is the biggest hindrance, i think, especially as funds are scarce.
Of course it was a previous regime and Sven has done just that, with Guendo, but we are 5 years behind.
In this time liverpool and spuds managed to sell their van-persie's, Ozil's and sanchez's for top dollar, re-investing the money on their squads and applying a strict "25 and under" policy.
All the more painful as Wenger was doing this 15 years ago (apart from the re-investing part). When the shackles came off, 5 years ago, he picked shitsters like Gervinho and Welbeck plus older opportunistic cast-offs Ozil and Sanchez. Egg-head then compounded this problem by the allowing them to run down their contracts(no need for me to explain the consequences) further eroding our war chest.

The Ozil and Sanchez types were fine.

The Gervinho, Park, mustafi, Xhaka (although playing better now), Mhkitaryan, mertesacker (great defender but not suited at all to a high line) types are what has killed us, along with the Walcotts Chamberlains etc. Players who we either invested a lot in time or money and who never repayed that.

Added to the fact we seemingly have a number of player who all Would be suited as a number 10 with a manger who doesn’t play that way at all, we have an unbalanced squad to say the least.

I agree with that and we all knew these guys were never going to carry us to the title.
Even the good buys, Arteta and Cazorla (before their legs went), were never getting us the title with all the holes in other parts of the team.
The year Leicester won it was our chance but Wenger's timidity in the transfer market or stubbornness in not recognising the weakness in CM will haunt me forever as he did not learn from our 08 collapse.

He refused to sign a striker despite us having only one in Giroud who was in the middle of a 15-game run without scoring. All our rivals were in transition and we had a golden chance of winning the league. Will never forgive Wenger for that.

Cahill loan would work. That’s smart dealing while we heal Kos, evaluate Mav, and scout others.
Then it’s probably Banega and one of those Ligue 1 wingers.

Me neither. That was supposed to be our year. The knock-on effect it could have had too... would, say, Mbappe have turned us down if we were recent league champions? Who knows. In the end we weren't ready for that league challenge though, just like we weren't ready when the player that Wenger had waited a decade for finally emerge.

Yeah, Zero issues with Cahill on a short-term loan. Him and Banega would be very useful reinforcements, and then we can hunt for centrebacks and wingers in the summer.

I'm still so sour on the knock-on effect for missing out on Suarez. That was the closest we had to signing a world class player for the past decade.

The issue is price and our need to spread our restricted revenues as far as possible.

I still believe that the objective of this current squad is to regain top4 in the short term, and it will be the next squad rebuild based upon the likes of Nelson, ES-R, Willock, Nketiah, AM-N along with Torreira, Guendouzi, Bellerin that will be expected to compete for titles. I also wonder if we're looking at an eventual CB combo of Holding & Mavropanos.
As such on paper it looks promising & if they can all become bona fide senior squad members that can allow us to spend in the market to target any gaps in the starting XI.

Meh, his trickiness would be nice out wide but he's not in great form. Need a January signing to come in and lift the team...plan has to be to bump ahead of Chelsea and hope for a Tottenham collapse.

Saw a couple of reports that suggested he is supposedly unhappy with things at Sevilla.

Talk we have made offers for Banega, Cahill (loan) and Pereira,
and that Rambo has agreed to join Juve in the summer.

We still need a winger (talk Lozano is now wanted by CFC), and a 3rd ST if we want to play our strongest options with both PEA and Lacazette both starting, let alone a CAM that fits Emery's requirements (not including the long term needs re L&RB as AM-N can cover both for the rest of the season).

Can't see us doing a madness and signing 5-6 senior players in Jan, not sure that a CB & winger would be enough to resolve the current needs as we still need a 3rd ST option.
